Miami Dominates Akron Doubleheader

AKRON, Ohio - The Miami University softball team took control of the doubleheader at Akron on Saturday. The RedHawks won the first game by a 16-5 margin in six innings. In the second game, Miami beat Akron 11-3 in five innings.
The RedHawks are now 22-22 on the season and 9-11 in conference play.
Miami 16, Akron 5 (6 inn.)
Jaime Scher started the game in the circle for Miami. Scher pitched one and one-third innings, giving up four runs on six hits. Scher did not walk any batters and struck out one. Taylor Rathe replaced Scher in the middle of the second inning and finished the game. Rathe pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up one run (zero earned) on three hits. Rathe did not walk any batters and struck out three.
The RedHawks came out swinging in the first inning, scoring seven runs. Megan Wurts led off with a solo home run, her seventh of the season. Ashton Slone hit a single and Johniann Wahl followed with a double that scored Slone. Akron made a pitching change. Kat Lee singled to score Wahl and then advanced to second on a fielding error. Lizzie Bollinger also singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Kaitlyn Gliha reached on a fielder's choice that brought Lee around. Morgan Lott walked to load the bases. Mackenzie Moore singled and scored Bollinger. Wurts hit a single that would score Gliha and Lott. Wurts advanced to second on a throw that saw Moore out on the bases.
Akron answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. The Zips also led off with a home run. A flurry of four-straight singles scored two more runs before three-straight outs ended the inning.
Miami tacked on two more runs in the second the increase its lead to 9-4. Slone led off with a double and was brought home on a single from Wahl. Wahl advanced to third on an error. Bollinger reached on a fielder's choice that scored Wahl. Gliha walked but the inning ended before any more damage could be made.
Moore led off the third with a single but was stranded on base.
The Zips scored one run in the third inning on an error.
The RedHawks scored three more in the fifth to bring the score to 12-5. Gliha was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Lott hit a single that scored Gliha. Lott then advanced to second on an Akron fielding error and third on a ground ball. Wurts walked and stole second. Haeley Tran singled to bring Lott home. Tran stole second base. Slone walked to load the bases with one out. Wahl hit a sacrifice fly to score Wurts. Lee walked to load the bases again but they were left full when the inning ended.
Miami added four more runs to its total to bring the score to 16-5, matching its highest number of runs scored in a single game this season. Gliha doubled to lead off the inning, followed by a Lott single. Gliha scored on a wild pitch that moved Lott to third. Moore walked. Wurts singled and drove Lott home. Moore and Wurts each advanced on a wild pitch. Tran singled and scored Moore. Slone hit a sacrifice fly that brought Wurts around.
Rathe forced Akron to go three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth - two of those outs coming as strikeouts.
Wurts led the RedHawks' offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBI's. Wahl tallied three RBI's. Tran, Slone, Wahl, Lott and Moore all had two hits.
Miami 11, Akron 3 (5 inn.)
Shannon Hohman pitched the complete game, giving up three runs on three hits while walking four and striking out three.
Tran tripled for the first time of the season in the first inning but was left on third.
Akron struck first putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first on a double and a single.
Miami had a huge inning in the second, putting up nine runs and bringing 13 batters to the plate. Lee led things off with a triple. Bollinger's singled brought Lee home to tie the game at one run apiece. Gliha hit a two-run home run to give Miami the lead. Lott singled and stole second. Moore hit a single that would score Lott. Wurts followed with a single as well and advanced to second on an error. Moore scored on an error that saw Wurts take third. Slone drove Wurts in with a single. Wahl doubled to bring Slone home. Lee singled to score Wahl and then stole second. Gliha brought Lee home with a double. Lott singled but left early trying to steal second and ended the inning.
Wurts got on base with a single in the third inning but was out on a double play.
In the top of the fourth, Wahl walked with one out. Jenny Vasquez pinch ran for Wahl. Bollinger hit a two-out single and Gliha walked to load the bases. A force-out play ended the inning.
Kara Leckinger was hit by a pitch in the fifth while pinch hitting for Moore. Tran hit a single to move Leckinger to second. Wahl doubled to bring around both Leckinger and Tran.
Akron hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Wahl and Gliha led the RedHawks' offense with three RBI's apiece. Gliha earned her RBI's from a home run and a double while Wahl cashed in on two doubles. Wurts, Tran, Wahl, Lee, Bollinger, Gliha and Lott all had two hits.
UP AHEAD
Miami closes the regular season with a three-game series at Buffalo. The two teams will play one game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
