Miami Splits With Ohio On Senior Day

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team split its doubleheader with Ohio on Saturday to close the 2018 home schedule. The RedHawks were edged out 1-0 in the first game in the 11th inning. In the second game, Miami beat Ohio 5-3 in 12 innings.
The RedHawks move to 20-21 on the season and 7-10 in MAC play. Miami handed Ohio only its second conference loss this season.
Ohio 1, Miami 0 (11 inn.)
Jaime Scher started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. Scher pitched five full innings and two batters in the sixth inning. Scher gave up no runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out one.
Courtney Vierstra relieved Scher in the top of the sixth with two on and no outs. Vierstra finished the game, going six full innings. Vierstra gave up one run on two hits and four walks while striking out six.
Ashton Slone had the first hit of the ball game on either side, a two-out double, in the bottom of the first.
Ohio loaded the bases in the second but did not score.
Rylee Whispel hit a single in the second but was stranded.
Mackenzie Moore led off the third inning with a single but did not score.
Johniann Wahl threw out a runner at home in the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless.
Ohio loaded the bases again in the sixth inning but did not score.
Slone hit her second double of the day in the sixth but is the only base runner that inning.
Whispel walked in the bottom of the seventh.
Miami got two baserunners in the eighth in Haeley Tran getting hit by a pitch and Ashton Slone being walked.
The RedHawks also got two on base in the bottom of the ninth on a single from Whispel and a walk to Morgan Lott.
Ohio scored in the top of the eleventh inning on a pair of singles.
Despite a lead-off single from Johniann Wahl, the RedHawks could not come back.
Slone and Whispel each had two hits in the game.
Miami 5, Ohio 3 (12 inn.)
Shannon Hohman started the game in the circle. Hohman pitched two and two-third innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking none.
Taylor Rathe replaced Hohman in the second inning with two outs. Rathe went for four and one-third innings, giving up no runs and only one hit while striking out three batters.
Vierstra started in the circle in the top of the eighth inning. Vierstra finished the game, going five innings and giving up no runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
Megan Wurts led off with a single in the first inning and reached as far as third before being stranded on base.
Ohio opened scoring in the second with a solo shot.
Kaitlyn Gliha singled in the second but was the only baserunner for Miami.
The Bobcats increased their lead to 3-0 in the third with three singles and a double.
Miami put a run on the board in the third on three singles, but plays on the bases ended the RedHawks' threat.
Kat Lee cut Ohio's lead to 3-2 with her second home run of the weekend. Lizzie Bollinger and Lott each singled after Lee's home run but did not reach home.
In the fifth, Slone reached base on error and Wahl singled.
Kara Leckinger tied the game in the sixth inning with a single, scoring Bollinger who doubled. Whispel singled after Bollinger's double.
Wahl singled and reached third on an error in the seventh.
Ohio loaded the bases in the ninth but a strikeout from Vierstra ended the inning.
With two outs and Slone on first due to an Ohio fielding error, Wahl's ball to the fence was caught by Ohio's left fielder to end Miami's threat in the ninth.
In the bottom of the 12th inning, Wahl hit a two-out double. Lee hit her third homerun of the weekend, second of the day, to earn a walk-off win for the RedHawks.
Lee led the Miami offense with two home runs and three RBI.
