OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team split the doubleheader with Kent State in nail-biting fashion. The RedHawks' comeback fell short in the first game 4-3. Miami bounced back in the second game to win 6-5 in 11 innings.

The RedHawks now hold a 16-19 overall record and 5-8 conference record.

Kent State 4, Miami 3

Courtney Vierstra started the game for the RedHawks in the circle. Vierstra pitched five full innings, giving up five hits, four runs and three walks while striking out six batters. Shannon Hohman replaced Vierstra to begin the sixth inning and finished the game. Hohman pitched two complete innings, giving up no hits, no runs and one walk while striking out two.

Vierstra struck out the side in the top of the second.

Johniann Wahl hit a solo shot in the bottom of two to give Miami an early 1-0 lead.

Kent State scored three in the top of the fourth to take a lead that would not be relinguished. The runs scored on a string of four singles and an intentional walk.

The Golden Flashes tacked another run on in the fifth on a walk and a double to take a 4-1 lead.

Hohman put together a 1-2-3 inning in her first inning to give the RedHawks some momentum.

In the bottom of the sixth, Miami scored a pair of runs to bring the game within one. Megan Wurts led off the inning with a single. Ashton Slone and Wahl both walked (Wahl's was intentional) to load the bases with one out. Kat Lee hit a single that drove Wurts home. Kaitlyn Gliha then hit a sacrifice fly that brought Slone around.

Wahl led the RedHawks' offense, reaching base three times (a home run and two walks) and earning an RBI. Haeley Tran, Lizzie Bollinger, Wurts and Lee all hit singles. Lee and Gliha picked up the other two Miami RBI's.

Miami 6, Kent State 5 (11 inn.)

Hohman started the game in the circle, pitching for two full innings. Hohman gave up two runs on three hits. Taylor Rathe relieved Hohman to begin the third inning and also pitched two full innings. Rathe gave up two runs on five hits. Vierstra finished the game in the circle, pitching six and two thirds innings. Vierstra gave up only one run on 10 hits, while walking four and striking out two.

Kent State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of singles and a double.

Miami countered in the bottom of the first with a solo shot from Wurts.

The RedHawks tied the game at two in the second inning. Hohman hit a single immediately followed by a walk from Mackenzie Moore. Morgan Lott laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Rathe pinch ran for Hohman and scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Flashes reclaimed the lead with a run in the third on a single, walk and double. Miami gunned down a Kent State runner at home to end the inning.

Miami took its first lead of the game in the bottom of three by a 4-3 margin. Tran led off with a single, followed by a walk from Wahl. With two outs, Gliha hit a single that scored two.

Kent State tied the game at four runs aside in the fourth on two singles.

The RedHawks took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Lott single and a Tran double to bring Lott around.

Miami left the bases loaded in the fifth on a double from Slone and walks from Gliha and Bollinger.

The Golden Flashes tied the game at five in the sixth with a couple of singles and a double.

Both teams had their chances during extra innings.

In the eighth, Kent State loaded the bases with one out before a force out at home and a strikeout ended the inning.

Miami had two baserunners in the eighth in Wurts' single and Wahl's intentional walk.

Each team had one baserunner in the ninth inning.

In the 11th inning, Kent State had a pair of singles and three fielder's choice plays that did not see anyone around.

Slone led off the 11th with a walk but was out on a fielder's choice hit by Lee. Gliha laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lee to second. Bollinger had the walk off single with two outs.

Nine different players reached base for the RedHawks. Bollinger tallied three hits (two doubles and a single) and a walk. Wurts (home run, single, RBI), Tran (single, double, RBI) and Slone (double, single, two walks) all recorded two hits. Wahl led the squad with three walks. Gliha led Miami with two RBI's.
