COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Miami University softball team split its doubleheader on Friday at the Maryland Invitational. The RedHawks lost the first game of the day to Yale by a 3-2 margin. Miami then shutout Maryland 2-0.

Miami's record is now 7-9 on the season.

Yale 3, Miami 2

Taylor Rathe started the game in the circle and contributed a solid four innings for the RedHawks, giving up only one hit, no runs and five walks while striking out four batters.

After holding Yale off the scoreboard in the top of the first, Miami took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Megan Wurts led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on sacrifice plays by Haeley Tran and Kat Lee. Johniann Wahl brought Wurts around with a single.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when Lee hit a double that drove in Wurts to make it a 2-0 game. Wurts had gotten onto base with a single and stole second to get into scoring position.

Jaime Scher replaced Rathe as the pitcher for the start of the fifth inning. Scher gave up two hits and two runs before being relieved by Courtney Vierstra with two outs. Vierstra finished the game giving up two hits, one run and one walk, while striking out two.

In the top of the seventh with two outs, Yale scored the winning run on a double.

Miami 2, Maryland 0

The RedHawks ended on top in a game that remained scoreless for five innings. Shannon Hohman and Courtney Vierstra combined for the shutout in the circle. Hohman started the game and pitched five complete innings. She only allowed three hits and no walks and struck out one batter. Vierstra pitched the remaining two innings, giving up no hits or walks and striking out three.

Miami got two runners on base in the first on fielding errors, but they were stranded on base.

In the fourth inning Ashton Slone was walked but also left on base.

Slone made it on base in the sixth inning on catcher's interference and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Johniann Wahl then walked to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Kat Lee hit a double that drove in two runs and won the game.

The RedHawks close out the Maryland Invitational with a game against Jacksonville on Saturday at 10 a.m.
