COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Miami University softball team was edged out by Utah 2-1 in its first game of the Maryland Invitational on Thursday.
Miami's record drops to 6-8 on the season.

Shannon Hohman started in the circle for the RedHawks, shutting down the Utah in the first three innings. Hohman faced only four batters in each of the first two innings and retired the side in the third. Hohman struck out three, walked two and allowed no hits in the first three innings. In the fourth inning, the first two Utah batters each hit a solo homerun to put them on the board.
Courtney Vierstra replaced Shannon Hohman after Utah got onto the scoreboard. Vierstra struck out three batters and gave up no walks or runs in her three innings pitched.
Miami scored its run in the top of the third - the first run by either team in the game. Megan Wurts started off with a single and Haeley Tran was walked to give the RedHawks runners on first and second. Ashton Slone batted into a fielder's choice that saw Wurts forced out at third. Johniann Wahl loaded the bases by reaching on a fielding error. With two outs, Kat Lee hit a single that brought home Tran from third.
The RedHawks got someone on base in five innings. Tran, Wurts, Lee and Rylee Whispel all had a hit. Kaitlyn Gliha walked twice with Tran and Whispel each walked once. Mackenzie Moore also made it on base after being hit by a pitch.

On Friday, Miami takes on Yale for a 10 a.m. contest. The RedHawks face the home team, Maryland, at 3 p.m.
