DEKALB, Ill. - The Miami University softball team split its doubleheader against NIU on Friday. The RedHawks won the first game by a 1-0 margin and lost the second game 8-0 in five innings. Miami's record is now 12-12.
Miami 1, NIU 0
Courtney Vierstra pitched the complete game shutout for the RedHawks. Vierstra struck out eight batters and only walked one.
Miami scored its run in the second inning. Kat Lee led off the inning with a double. Kaitlyn Gliha advanced Lee to third with a sacrifice bunt. Rylee Whispel earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly to bring Lee home.
Miami got someone on base in four of six innings as it was still considered the home team and did not have to bat in the seventh. Haeley Tran led the RedHawks by getting onto base twice, a single in the first inning and a walk in the third. Megan Wurts also had a single.
NIU 8, Miami 0 (5 inn.)
Shannon Hohman got the start for Miami in the circle.
NIU took an early 3-0 lead off two singles and home run in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first, Wurts hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lee walked but was out on a fielder's choice play. Wurts was stranded on base.
Whispel threw out a runner in the top of the second for the third consecutive out.
Gliha had a lead-off double in the bottom of the second, but three-straight outs left her on base.
NIU increases its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third on a fielder's choice play and a double. Runners reached base on a hit-by-pitch play and an error. After these runs scored, Taylor Rathe replaced Hohman as pitcher.
The score remained 6-0 until NIU tacked on a couple more in the top of the fifth to finish the game. A single, triple and sacrifice fly brought in two runs. Miami could not score in the bottom of the fifth so the game ended after five.

Miami will finish its series with NIU on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game.
