BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Miami baseball team dropped its opening game of the Campbell Invitational to Western Michigan, 4-2, Friday afternoon in 10 innings. With Miami holding a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the ninth, the Broncos scored a run to force extras before ending it in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off, two-run homer.
The Red & White gave the starting nod on the mound to Spencer Mraz. The sophomore was electric in four innings of work, allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high seven batters.
Both starters cruised through the first several innings. Miami got the first big chance in the game but left the bases loaded in the sixth. WMU would finally break through on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. The 'Hawks would answer quickly in the next half inning on a Cal Elvers sacrifice fly before taking the lead on a Grant Hartwig RBI single that plated Dallas Hall.
A Bronco solo shot in the ninth evened it up, sending MU to its first extra-inning contest of the season. In the bottom of the 10th, a Nate Grys two-run, walk-off blast sent WMU to its first win of the year.
The Red & White are back on the diamond Saturday for a doubleheader with Yale beginning at 10 a.m.
