DULUTH, Minn. - No. 11/12 Minnesota Duluth scored a couple first period goals and handed the Miami hockey team a 4-0 setback in the team's series opener on Friday night.

The RedHawks fall to 10-16-3 (5-12-2-0 National Collegiate Hockey) with the defeat.

Neither team generated a great deal of offense as they felt each other out in the early going. A power play changed all that for Minnesota Duluth as Mikey Anderson put it on the board with a point shot at the 8:19 mark. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 just two minutes later as Billy Exell swung a pass in front that went off a RedHawk and in.

While MU did get a couple power plays following the hole it found itself in, it was unable to get much going on the man advantage as it trailed by those two goals after 20 minutes while getting outshot 13-4 in the process.

Jade Miller put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0 just 3:15 into the second period as the RedHawks' hill got a bit higher to climb out of. Miami got one more power play in the second period, but nothing came of it as its hole grew a bit following the second period.

The RedHawks created a power play 50 seconds into the third, but did not get luck with some good looks as their best chance was a Kiefer Sherwood shot that hit the post. Miami later had to kill a Minnesota Duluth power play, but Louie Roehl upped its lead to 4-0 with 10:08 remaining to essentially lock the result up.

Minnesota Duluth outshot Miami by a 35-16 margin and went 1-for-4 on the power play while killing off all four MU man advantages. Hunter Shepard finished with 16 saves while Larkin stopped 31 shots for the Red & White.

These teams finish their series on Saturday night. Puck drops at 8:07 p.m.
