Men's Basketball Earns 85-55 Win Over Army

Bowman and Brown each score 18 points for RedHawks

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University men's basketball team had things working on both ends of the floor as it earned an 85-55 victory over Army West Point Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Black Knights fall to 2-5.

Junior forward Bam Bowman and sophomore forward Dalonte Brown each had big games in the paint, as they led Miami with 18 points each. Bowman was 9-for-11 from the field as he finished just two points off his career high. He also brought in eight rebounds. Brown also just missed a double-double, bringing in nine rebounds.

The RedHawks shot 48.5 percent (32-for-66) as a team for the game, and drained 10 three-point baskets. Defensively, Miami held Army to 34.4 percent (22-for-64) shooting and kept them off the boards, holding a 48-34 rebounding advantage.

The lead changed hands a couple of times early before a Bowman basket in the paint put the 'Hawks on top, 9-7, at the 16:07 mark. Miami would lead the rest of the way. Sophomore guard Jalen Adaway stole the ball 20 seconds later and passed it to freshman guard Mekhi Lairy. Lairy then found Brown in the paint for a fast break dunk that made it 11-7. The RedHawks eventually made it a 9-0 run after senior point guard Darrian Ringo found sophomore guard Milos Jovic for a triple that pushed it to 16-7 with 13:04 to go.

A four-point play by sophomore Nike Sibande started a run of 10 straight points by the guard. His triple at the 10:19 mark made it 25-10. The Black Knights cut the deficit to 29-17 before an 8-0 run featuring four points each from Brown and Bowman made it 37-17 with 5:06 to go. Miami's offense went cold for the final five minutes, allowing Army to go on a 9-3 run to close the half, sending the RedHawks into the break in front, 40-26.

Sibande drained a three-pointer on the first possession in the second half as Miami's offense began to take control. After a Ringo steal, he found Brown for a triple that made it 48-29. Sibande and Brown three-pointers made it a 14-3 run to start the period and made it 54-29 with 14:55 to go.

A jumper by Lairy and an old-fashioned three-point play from redshirt senior guard Abdoulaye Harouna extended the advantage to 59-37 at the 12:07 mark. Lairy, Bowman and Harouna each hit jumpers to make it 66-40 with 9:28 left. With the score out of reach, head coach Jack Owens was able to empty the bench and Miami cruised to an 85-55 win.

Sibande had 17 points for the RedHawks, while Lairy had seven. Redshirt senior forward Aleks Abrams tied for the team lead with nine rebounds, while Ringo finished with five points, four rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

Miami returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Xavier. The game will tip at 6:30 p.m. and will be nationally televised on Fox Sports 1.
