OXFORD, Ohio - After opening the season on the road on Saturday, the Miami University men's basketball team faces a quick turnaround as it hosts Midway for its home opener on Monday. Tip time is 7 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN3.
TWENTY POINT EFFORT FOR SIBANDE: Picking up where he left off last season, sophomore guard Nike Sibande led Miami with 24 points in Saturday's loss at Butler. He was 9-for-20 from the field and 4-for-12 from behind the arc. It was the second highest scoring effort of his career (behind his career high of 29 at Campbell in last year's CBI) and his 11th career 20+ scoring game.
SUCCESS IN FIRST HOME GAME: The RedHawks have been very successful in their home openers throughout their 114 year history. They hold a 91-22 (.805) record all-time in their first game in Oxford. Last season, Miami overcame an eight-point deficit over the final four minutes to defeat Wright State, 73-67 in overtime, in its Millett Hall opener. The team has won 25 of its past 27 home openers.
HEROES NIGHT: This game has been designated Miami's men's basketball's Heroes Night. The RedHawks want to honor all heroes, defined as military, veterans and first responders both active and retired. All Heroes, plus their guests, receive a special rate of $8 per ticket (advanced purchase only).
ABOUT MIDWAY: The Eagles are 3-2 on the season. They are coming off a 99-89 overtime victory over Crowley's Ridge on Saturday. A NAIA Division II school, they are in their third year as a coed institution after formally being an all-women's college. Midway's offense runs through sophomore forward Kwon Evans. He leads the team in both scoring at 21.8 points per game and rebounds at 7.2 caroms per contest. Another key player is junior guard Kaleb Britt. He is averaging 13.4 points per game.
THE SERIES WITH MIDWAY: Miami and Midway have only met once, on Nov. 29, 2017. The RedHawks came away with a 123-40 victory in that contest. Miami set school records for most points scored in a game and margin of win in the victory. Jalen Adaway led the scoring with 22 points, while Darrian Ringo had an incredible 14 assists. Isaiah Coleman-Lands contributed 10 assists as well, as the RedHawks had 34 assists on 48 made baskets.
MIAMI VS. RIVER STATES CONFERENCE: The River States Conference was formally known as the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but renamed itself in 2016 to reflect that it has schools in Indiana, West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania as well. Miami is 2-0 against schools from the RSC. In addition to its win over Midway last season, it defeated Rio Grande as well in 2017.
UP AHEAD: For the second straight season, Miami will leave the United States to participate in a tournament. This time the RedHawks head to Nassau, Bahamas for The Islands of the Bahamas Showcase. The eight-team tournament will take place Friday through Sunday at the Kendal Isaacs National Gymnasium. The RedHawks begin play on Friday when they take on North Dakota State in the first round at 2 p.m. They will then face either Montana or Incarnate Word on Saturday in either a second round game at 5 p.m. or a consolation game at 11 a.m. They will then take on either Pepperdine, Georgia Southern, Florida Atlantic or Towson at a to be determined time in the finale on Sunday.
