Bowling Green Snaps Miami Volleyball's Win Streak at Nine

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University volleyball team ran into an experienced Bowling Green squad as it saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end in a 0-3 (21-25, 23-25, 17-25) defeat on Thursday. The RedHawks are now 19-6 overall and 11-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons improve to 16-10 overall and 10-3 in the MAC.
Miami recorded 42 kills in the match to Bowling Green's 40, but was done in by 22 errors. The RedHawks hit .138 for the match, while the Falcons finished with a .226 attack percentage. Junior middle hitter Margaret Payne led MU with 10 kills and a .348 attack percentage.
Tied at five in set one, a 10-2 run by Bowling Green put it in control at 15-7. Payne and sophomore setter Morgan Seaman each had kills, but the Falcons eventually got the advantage to nine at 20-11. Miami did not give up as back-to-back kills from freshman right side hitter Sophie Riemersma and senior middle hitter Courtney Simons off assists from freshman setter Louise Comerford started a RedHawk comeback attempt. Junior outside hitter Taylor Daignault had three kills as part of a 9-3 run that cut the deficit to three at 20-23. The Falcons scored next to get set point. MU fought it off once with a kill by sophomore right side hitter Sarah Wojick, but BGSU scored next to earn a 25-21 win.
Miami had a stronger start to set two as kills from Wojick, Payne, Riemersma and Simons helped it to a 6-4 advantage. Bowling Green responded with an 8-3 run to take the lead back at 12-9. Trailing 13-16, freshman middle hitter Corinne Jemison took over for the RedHawks. She scored five points in a row off four kills and a block to give Miami an 18-16 advantage and force a Falcon timeout. Out of the break, she got her sixth straight point as she teamed up with Daignault for another block to make it 19-16. Bowling Green followed with an 8-2 run to create set point at 24-21. A Falcon attack error and a kill by Riemersma cut the deficit to one, but BGSU scored next to take a 25-23 victory.
Payne and Daignault each had kills as part of a 4-2 start in set three for Miami, but a 12-4 run by Bowling Green put it on top, 14-8. Payne had two kills, while Jemison had one as the RedHawks were able to close within two points at 15-17, but the Falcons finished with an 8-2 run to earn a 25-17 win and take the match in straight sets.
Jemison and Daignault each had eight kills for Miami. Seaman led the RedHawks with 16 assists, while sophomore libero Abigail Huser finished with 20 digs.
Miami will look to get back on track Saturday when it travels to Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. match. The contest will air live on ESPN3.
