OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week, redshirt senior linebacker Brad Koenig and freshman soccer goalkeeper Lauren Parker are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7.
Koenig, making his first career start at middle linebacker, had four tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in Miami's 41-17 road win at Akron. Koenig and the entire RedHawk defense held the Zips to 259 yards of offense, including just 56 yards rushing (on 28 carries). Overall, the defense forced five turnovers and had three sacks in the victory.
This the first time this season and second time in his career that Koenig has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Sept. 12-18, 2016.
Making her first collegiate starts due to an injury to senior Patricia Koutoulas, Parker proved her mettle with a pair of strong performances in Miami's net. In her first career start at Western Michigan on Thursday, Parker almost single handedly kept the RedHawks within striking distance with a busy afternoon where she set Miami's school record with 18 saves. That total was three more than the previous school record and five more than the next best performance by a MAC keeper this season. While seeing less action against Northern Illinois, Parker ended up stopping both shots she faced to earn both her first career win and first career solo shutout as Miami picked up its first MAC win of the year. Her .818 save percentage would rank second among MAC keepers once she plays enough minutes to qualify for the leader board.
This is the first time this season and in her career that Parker has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, Oct. 15.
