OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team was edged out by Michigan State 3-2. The RedHawks fall to 4-5 on the season and the Spartans improve to 5-5.

"Especially in the second half, I think we were controlling the game very well," said head coach Inako Puzo. "We scored and we went up. After we scored the second goal, we played not to lose the game. We stopped playing to win the game."

Michigan State led in shots 18-14 and penalty corners 8-7.

The Spartans got onto the scoreboard first with a goal by Sophie Macadre during the seventh minute of play. She took the ball down the middle of the field by herself and touched it past RedHawks' goalkeeper, Maddie Passarella. This is Macadre's fourth goal of the season.

Paula Portugal tied the game during the 13th minute with her eighth goal of the season. Marie-Claire Gorner stopped the ball for Portugal on a penalty corner and Portugal beat Mairi Fletcher.

Miami and Michigan State were tied at halftime.

Leonor Berlie netted her second of the season to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute of play.

Kendal Anderson tied the game for the Spartans with her sixth goal of the season during the 61st minute. Anderson put a rebound in net after Passarella stopped the initial shot off a penalty corner.

With time expired, Michigan State earned more than one penalty corner to net their winning goal. Grace Santi earned her first goal of the season with the setup from Anderson.

"I think [morale] is something we have to work on in practice especially," said junior back/midfielder Avery Sturm. "I think sometimes after a long weekend we are tired going into the next week and sometimes our morale is a little low, our energy is a little low. I think that's something we could work on as a group to fix early in the week to carry on into our later games."

"Come out everyday, whether it's a game, whether it's practice, whether it's lifting, and give 100 percent," said senior back Makenna Colby. "That's something that everyone needs to work on."

Portugal led the team with five shots and Berlie had four. Passarella made eight saves in net.

The RedHawks travel to Louisville, Ky. for a neutral match against Wake Forest on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
