OXFORD, Ohio - In their final home doubleheader of the season, Miami University's softball team was powered by strong pitching, splitting the games against the University of Akron Saturday afternoon at the Miami Softball Stadium.

In the opener, the RedHawks (28-22, 13-10 MAC) maintained a 1-0 lead for the first six innings of play before a late Zips (26-27, 12-11 MAC) rally gave them a 4-1 win. In the second matchup, a two-hit complete game from senior Carly Mortensen helped Miami take a 3-0 contest.

Prior to the game, five RedHawk seniors, pitchers Mortensen and Kelsey Fredericks, catcher Lauren Anderson, outfielder Jenna Jones and second baseman Eryn McCarver were honored for their contributions to the Miami softball program.

Game 1 - Akron 4, Miami 1

Sophomore starter Shannon Hohman set the tone for her performance with two strikeouts in the top of the first. Hohman would go on to retire the first 15 Akron batters she faced, allowing only one hit through the first six innings. In the bottom of the first, the RedHawks quickly loaded the bases, allowing junior left fielder Kaitlyn Gliha to score when junior third baseman Kat Lee was hit by a pitch. A pair of fielder's choices would end the inning for Miami, who would not score for the remainder of the game.

In the third, a pair of walks gave Miami two on, but a strikeout ended the inning without further scoring. Later in the fourth, McCarver doubled with two outs before advancing to third on a wild pitch, but a ground out stranded her.

After getting their first hit in the top of the sixth, the Zips placed two in scoring position with one out, but Hohman evaded trouble with two quick outs. Lee led off the bottom half with a double down the right field line, but she was left at third to close the frame.

In the top of the seventh, Akron began its surge with consecutive singles, followed by a walk that loaded the bases and chased Hohman from the game. Fredericks entered in relief and allowed a grand slam to left-center by right fielder Taylor Kirian. The Zips continued with a single to center field, but a pair of outs ended the inning.

The RedHawks looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, setting up promisingly with two on and one out. Miami was unable to capitalize as McCarver was caught stealing at third, followed by a pop-out to conclude the game.

Hohman received the loss, despite only allowing three hits and striking out five over six innings of work. McCarver finished 2-for-2, while Lee went 1-for-1 with a double and Miami's lone run.

Game 2 - Miami 3, Akron 0

The second half of the doubleheader started slowly for both teams, with neither racking up a hit in the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, Lee put Miami on the board with a RBI single to right, scoring sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman from second. The bases would eventually fill up, but Anderson was called out at second on runner's interference. The collision with Akron's second baseman cancelled out two Miami runs and took Anderson. out of the game.

Schlattman added to Miami's lead in the fourth with a RBI single to right, scoring Gliha from third. In the next inning, Akron picked up its only two hits of the game, but a pop-up stranded two Zips on the base path.

After another fruitless Akron frame in the sixth, a Zips error with two outs in the bottom half allowed Miami to add an insurance run. Following a misplayed hit by Tran, Schlattman tallied another RBI with a single that scored Jones from second.

In the top of the seventh, Mortensen closed out her terrific performance with three quick outs. For the afternoon, she allowed only two hits and struck out four in a complete game effort.

The RedHawks and Zips will close out the regular season on Sunday, May 7 at noon. Live stats will be provided on MiamiRedHawks.com and a live audio stream will be available to subscribers to Miami College Sports Live.
