OXFORD, Ohio - An early hole proved too tough to overcome as Miami baseball fell to Buffalo, 6-5, in the series opener on Saturday at McKie Field.
The Bulls (15-26, 7-9 MAC) got off to a hot start by plating four runs on three hits in their first chance at the plate. The Red & White began to chip away at the UB lead with a single tally in both the first and second innings. A leadoff solo shot in the first by Tyler Harris and a Will Vogelgesang safety squeeze in the second had the deficit cut in half at 4-2.
In the top of the fourth, another Miami safety squeeze, this time by Hayden Senger, got the 'Hawks to within one as the teams entered the fifth inning. Buffalo would get the run right back on an RBI double in the top half, but the Red & White had an answer once again, pushing across one on an Adam Yacek one-out double down the left field line that scored Dallas Hall, who had gotten on via a leadoff double. The Miami marker had the score at 5-4 in favor of the Bulls.
The top of the sixth saw the Bulls retake their two-run advantage as they capitalized on a RedHawk wild pitch with a runner on third.
Miami (19-29, 5-11 MAC) had its chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Grant Hartwig, who was pinch hitting, drew a bases-loaded walk to narrow the deficit to 6-5, but a strikeout the next at bat left the bases juiced.
The 'Hawks and Bulls close the series with a Sunday doubleheader that is set to begin at 11 a.m.
