CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Miami baseball team could not overcome an early deficit as it fell to Xavier, 9-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Field in Cincinnati. The defeat dropped the RedHawks to 7-20 on the year while the Musketeers moved to 17-12.
Xavier garnered an early lead with a five-spot in the bottom of the second. A two-run homer, a two-run double and a one-run single had the Muskies up 5-0 through two.
A leadoff solo shot in the home half of the sixth widened the Xavier margin to 6-0.
Miami got back in the game with a multi-run seventh. Dallas Hall led off the inning with a walk before a Landon Stephens double put RedHawks on second and third for Hayden Senger, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right and plated Hall to make it 6-1. A Tom Kelley walk and a Brooks Urich single loaded the bases for MU and, after another out, Adam Yacek ripped a double to the gap in right, scoring Stephens and Urich. Ross Haffey capped the scoring with a double to right that allowed Urich to come home and bring the Red & White to within two at 6-4.
Having seen their lead quickly diminish, the Musketeers answered by striking for three runs in their portion of the seventh, pushing the score to 9-4. Miami had a couple baserunners in its last two opportunities at the plate but it could not manufacture a comeback.
The RedHawks now set their sights back on MAC play as they get ready to host Eastern Michigan for a three-game weekend series at McKie Field. The action gets underway on Friday at 6 p.m.
