ATHENS, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Struggles at the plate continued to hinder Miami University's softball team as they fell, 10-2, in five innings to Ohio University in the series finale Saturday afternoon at the Ohio Softball Field.
Sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off the game for the RedHawks (27-21, 12-9 MAC) with a triple to right-center, but Ohio starter Savannah Jo Dorsey induced three outs to strand her. In the bottom half, Miami starter Jaime Scher returned the favor by leaving two Bobcats (33-14, 14-7 MAC) on the bags.
The Bobcats struck first in the bottom of the second when sophomore center fielder MacKenzie Brunswick brought home a run with a RBI single up the middle. Brunswick later came around to score on a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, senior Carly Mortensen relieved Scher and allowed two Bobcats to reach on a walk and hit-by-pitch. After tagging out the lead runner at third on a fielder's choice, Ohio added to its advantage as senior catcher Madison Claytor knocked in two with a RBI double to right.
The RedHawks threatened in the top of the fifth as Dorsey walked junior left fielder Kaitlyn Gliha and senior center fielder Jenna Jones, followed by a wild pitch that put both in scoring position. Two batters later, an Ohio fielding error allowed for both to score, narrowing the margin to 4-2.
In the bottom half, the Bobcats immediately responded as sophomore third baseman Alex Day sent the first pitch of the frame over the center field fence, bringing the score to 5-2. Later in the inning, Brunswick broke open the game with her second home of the game, a three-run shot that made it 8-2 and forced sophomore Shannon Hohman to the mound for Miami. After a pop-up in her first batter, four consecutive hits led to the final two Ohio runs, clinching a run-rule victory.
The RedHawks return home next weekend to conclude the regular season with a three-game series against Akron. The set opens on Friday, May 5 at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m. Prior to Saturday's games, the five senior RedHawks will be honored.
