DAYTON, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Following a disappointing opener, Miami University's softball team rebounded with a strong offensive effort in the nightcap against Wright State University, splitting a doubleheader Tuesday evening at the WSU Softball Field.
The RedHawks (27-18, 12-6 MAC) were led by outstanding hitting performances from senior catcher Lauren Anderson and junior third baseman Kat Lee, who combined for seven RBIs and two home runs in the team's final non-conference affair of the year.
Game One: Wright State 5, Miami 4
The opening inning began promisingly for Miami as the Red and White loaded the bases with consecutive walks and a hit-by-pitch. Senior catcher Lauren Anderson capitalized on the opportunity, putting Miami on the board with a sacrifice fly to center field. The offense was unable to bring any more runners home, leaving the bases full at the end of the top half.
In the top of the third, sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl homered to left field, increasing her season total to 10 and putting her one shy of tying the school single-season record. The Raiders (15-25) broke through in the bottom half of the inning as junior right fielder Honnah Susor led off with a single and eventually made her way home on a sac fly to left, making the score 2-1.
Wright State threatened again in the bottom of the fourth as a double led to bases loaded with two outs, but sophomore starter Shannon Hohman escaped the inning with a strikeout. In the next inning, Anderson extended Miami's lead with a two-run homer to center. Following a walk, a pair of singles loaded the bases with one out, but the RedHawks were unable to add more runs.
In the top of the sixth, Anderson almost tallied her fourth RBI of the day with a single through the right side, but junior designated player Megan Wurts was thrown out at home to end the frame. The out would haunt Miami in the bottom half as senior first baseman Alexis Mayle tied the game with a three-run homer to left-center, knocking Hohman out of the game for senior Carly Mortensen. The Raiders would continue to attack, using a pair of singles to take a 5-4 lead.
The RedHawks were unable to rally in the seventh, going down in order to close the contest.
Anderson finished for 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, while Mortensen's record dropped to 5-3 with the loss. In a no decision, Hohman gave up six hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings of work.
Game Two: Miami 7, Wright State 1
In the top of the first, the RedHawks loaded the base with two outs, but stranded three runners for the third time in the doubleheader. In the bottom half, the Raiders also filled the bags, but a strikeout left them empty-handed as well.
In the next inning, freshman catcher Kara Leckinger hit the first home run of her career, a drive down the left field line that put Miami up 1-0.
After the Raiders once again stranded three in the bottom of the third, Miami threatened with singles in its first two at-bats. Junior left fielder Alyssa Hedric extended the RedHawks' lead to 2-0 with a sac fly, her first RBI of the season, that scored junior third baseman Kat Lee. The Raiders responded in their half as Susor homered to right, narrowing the margin to 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, senior center fielder Jenna Jones led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on an error, eventually scoring on a RBI single from Anderson. Following a double by sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman, Lee doubled to left-center, scoring two to make it 5-1 Miami. Lee would later score on a dropped fly ball, although an out at third ended the scoring threat.
The RedHawks looked for insurance runs in the sixth, but a fly-out ended the chance with two runners stranded in scoring position. In the seventh, Lee succeeded with a leadoff homer to center, bringing the score to 7-1. Later in the inning, Hedric continued a strong performance with a double to right-center, although she and Wurts would be left on base. The Raiders attempted another rally in the bottom half as their first two batters reached, but a double play sealed a Miami victory.
Mortensen's record improved to 6-3 with a complete game effort, allowing seven hits and striking out three Raiders. Lee propelled the RedHawks' offense, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.
The RedHawks remain on the road this weekend for a critical three-game conference set at Ohio, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. The two teams are separated by one game in the Mid-American Conference East Division standings with only six matchups remaining in the regular season.
