OXFORD, Ohio -- On a low-scoring day, Miami University's softball team used terrific pitching and defense to clinch a doubleheader sweep over the University at Buffalo Friday afternoon at the Miami Softball Stadium.

The RedHawks (25-17, 11-6 MAC) moved into sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division with a 6-3 victory in Game One, followed by a 1-0 win in Game Two's pitcher's duel.

Game One -- Miami 6, Buffalo 3

The Miami offense came out firing with consecutive singles to lead off the bottom of the first, eventually loading the bases with a walk to Wahl. Senior catcher Lauren Anderson was then hit by a pitch to bring in junior right fielder Megan Wurts to make it 1-0. The RedHawks were unable to rack up more runs as a pair of line-outs left the bags full.

Buffalo immediately responded in the top of the second with a RBI double to left that tied the game at 1. The Bulls continued to hit sophomore starter Shannon Hohman in the third, using a RBI single through the left side to take a 2-1 lead. After senior Carly Mortensen relieved Hohman, the Bulls added to their advantage with a RBI ground out, but the threat was soon cut off.

In the bottom of the third, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman single-handedly knotted the game with a two-run home run to right-center, placing her two away from the Miami career record. The RedHawks' rally continued in the fourth as Wahl's RBI single to left-center brought home Wurts to make it 4-3. Anderson continued her strong day with a two-run double to right-center that sealed the eventual 6-3 win.

The final three innings passed quietly with Miami only stranding a pair of runners in consecutive frames. In the seventh, Fredericks replaced Mortensen and needed only eight pitches to tally her fifth save of the season.

Wahl finished 2-for-2 with a RBI, while Wurts went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. On the mound, Mortensen improved to 5-2 with 3.2 innings of no-hit pitching in her strongest outing of the season.

Game Two -- Miami 1, Buffalo 0

Miami starter Jaime Scher and Buffalo righthander Ally Power faced off in a quick pitching duel that placed a premium on outstanding defense.

In the top of the fourth, Buffalo made the first threat of the contest, but junior third baseman Kat Lee saved a run by throwing out the lead runner on a sac bunt attempt. A much-needed ground-out ended the frame with two stranded Bulls. Miami carried the momentum into the bottom half as a pair of singles helped junior pinch runner Alyssa Hedric come around to score the game's only run on Lee's hit up the middle.

Both teams doubled in the sixth inning, but the strong work on the mound kept each squad from picking up more runs. In the final inning, Fredericks completed a two-inning save by hastily retiring the Bulls in order.

With the win, Scher evened her record at 4-4 with five innings of four-hit ball. Fredericks tied the national saves lead with her sixth of the year.

Miami and Buffalo will conclude their series on Saturday, April 22 with a matchup at 1:30 p.m. A live video stream will be available to all subscribers to Miami College Sports Live.
