OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami University's softball team took sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division by way of a doubleheader sweep against Kent State Friday afternoon at the Diamond at Dix.

The RedHawks (23-16, 9-5 MAC) pulled off come-from-behind victories in both matchups, including an eight-run sixth inning rally in the opener.

Game 1 ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami 12, Kent State 4 (6 inn.)

Following 1-2-3 opening innings for both teams, sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl put Miami on the board with a leadoff home run to left. The RedHawks continued to threaten in the inning, loading the bases with two outs, but a strikeout stranded all three runners. In the bottom half, the Golden Flashes (16-23, 6-8 MAC) struck back as senior pitcher Ronnie Ladines homered to left-center, giving them a 2-1 lead.

Wahl continued to excel in the top of the third, tying the game with a RBI double to left-center that scored senior second baseman Eryn McCarver. Two batters later, senior catcher Lauren Anderson doubled to left, bringing in Wahl to make it 3-2 Miami. In the next at-bat, freshman left fielder Haeley Tran extended the lead to 4-2 with a RBI single up the middle. In the bottom of the third, a single and error helped KSU place two in scoring position, but Miami starter Shannon Hohman got a strikeout to leave both on base.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kent State knotted the contest at 4 with a two-run, two-out homer to left by junior shortstop Holly Speers, forcing Miami to relieve Hohman with senior Kelsey Fredericks.

Miami immediately rebounded as senior center fielder Jenna Jones homered to left to make it 5-4. After Kent State loaded the bases with three walks, a pair of subsequent walks helped Miami build its advantage to 7-4. Tran then made it 8-4 with a single to right, earning her second RBI of the day. Returning to the plate, Jones sealed the victory with her second homer of the inning, a grand slam that made it 12-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Fredericks struck out all three Golden Flashes as she locked up her ninth win of the season, improving to 9-6.

Jones finished 2-for-3 with a pair of homers and her second five RBI performance of the season. Wahl was also outstanding, going 3-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Anderson and Tran also finished with two RBIs as well.

Game 2 ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami 3, Kent State 2

In the bottom of the second, Kent State led off with back-to-back hits, leading to a two-run single to left from Ladines. After freshman starter Jaime Scher hit the next batter, senior Carly Mortensen was inserted with two on and one out. Mortensen walked her first batter, but induced two outs to leave the bases loaded.

Following a pair of quiet innings, Jones led off the fifth with a single through the left side, followed by McCarver reaching on a throwing error. After Wahl was intentionally walked to load the bases, the Golden Flashes again walked in a run to make it 2-1. In the bottom half, a pair of walks gave KSU two on with two out, but the newly-installed Fredericks forced a ground-out to keep the deficit at one.

In the top of the seventh, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off with a single up the middle, eventually moving to third on a throwing error. After a line-out, Wahl was again intentionally walked, leaving the bases loaded with two outs. Junior catcher Rylee Whispel capitalized with a two-run double to center that gave Miami the lead at 3-2.

Following the rally, Fredericks walked two Golden Flashes in the bottom of the seventh, but got a ground-out to seal the comeback victory.

Fredericks earned her second win of the day with three innings of no-hit ball, improving her mark to 10-6 and tallying double-digit wins for the first time in her career.

Miami will close out the series with a matchup tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on MiamiRedHawks.com.
