DAYTON, Ohio - The Miami University baseball team banged out 16 hits en route to a 16-9 triumph over Dayton on Tuesday evening. Freshman Landon Stephens lead the effort for the RedHawks by going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, a home run, a double and two runs scored.
Joining Stephens in posting three-hit efforts were Adam Yacek and Hayden Senger. Yacek went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two doubles while Senger was 3-of-4 with one run batted in and two runs scored.
Dayton (10-20) got itself an early advantage with a two-run single in the bottom of the second before adding to it in the next inning with a one-run double, giving the Flyers a 3-0 lead through three innings of play.
The Red & White (9-23) offense awoke in the fourth and did not skip a beat the rest of the way. Miami put up multi-run frames in each of the final six innings. Dallas Hall pushed across the first RedHawk run of the day when a converted safety squeeze allowed Yacek to score from third. Stephens followed with a two-run homer to right, his first career round-tripper, knotting the score at three apiece.
Miami got its first lead of the evening when Senger reached on a two-out walk just prior to another two-run MU blast, this time from Ross Haffey. The junior's sixth homer of the season handed the `Hawks a 5-3 lead through four and a half innings of action.
A three-run sixth was highlighted by RBI singles from Hayden Senger and J.T. Stone, as well as a successful safety squeeze from Brooks Urich. Carrying an 8-3 lead after six, the `Hawks tacked on four more in the seventh. Grant Hartwig and Stephens each posted RBI doubles while Carlos Texidor got in on the action with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Hall. J.T. Stone closed the inning with an RBI groundout that allowed Stephens to touch home. Miami owned a 12-3 lead after six and a half frames.
The eighth inning featured a couple `firsts' with Will Vogelgesang and Tom Kelley each notching their first career RBI on singles with the bases loaded, which gave the `Hawks a 14-3 margin. In the bottom half of the frame, Dayton struck back for six runs to narrow the RedHawk lead to 14-9 entering the final inning of play.
After the Flyers made things interesting, Miami got itself a little more breathing room in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Hartwig and an RBI single from Stephens. The Red & White kept UD from making another run with a quick bottom of the ninth, capturing the 16-9 victory.
Nick Ernst led the pitching effort Tuesday by picking up the win after going five innings in relief. He allowed just two hits and one run to comes across while striking out three.
The same two squads go right back at it Wednesday in Oxford at 6 p.m. for the team's Social Media Night at McKie Field.
