MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Miami baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Central Michigan on Saturday at Bill Theunissen Stadium. The Chippewas took game one, 13-7, before hanging on late to top the `Hawks, 6-4, in game two.
The results put MU at 7-18 (1-4 MAC) on the season while CMU now stands at 12-14 (2-0 MAC).
Game 1 Recap - CMU 13, Miami 7
CMU took advantage of a couple scoring opportunities in their intial chance at the plate, striking twice on back-to-back two-out RBI singles, giving the Chippewas a 2-0 edge after one.
Miami fought back to knot things up in the top half of the third. With one out, Carlos Texidor reached on a hit by pitch before a Brooks Urich single put two aboard and one in scoring position for the `Hawks. Back-to-back RBI base hits by Ross Haffey and Adam Yacek brought around two runs and tied the game at 2-all through two and a half.
The Chippewas capitalized on a costly Miami miscue in the fourth. When the Red & White should have been in the dugout, CMU would make them pay by striking for four runs with two out, scoring on an error, a two-run double and a one-run single.
Miami answered in the away portion of the fifth and cut the deficit in half at 6-4 courtesy of a one-run double by Cal Elvers and a one-run single by Dallas Hall. However, the Chippewas would strike for four more runs in the bottom of the frame, moving out to a 10-4 lead behind a two-run homer and a two-run single.
CMU padded its advantage by tacking on two runs in the sixth and a single tally in the eighth. Tyler Harris' three-run blast in the top of the ninth brought MU within six at 13-7 but the Chippewas would hang on to grab the series-opening victory.
Both starters were the pitchers of record in the first contest. Miami's Zach Spears (L, 1-6) went 3.2 innings and allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits. He also walked and struck out two. CMU's Dazon Cole (W, 2-4) tossed five innings of four-run ball. He allowed seven hits while fanning five RedHawks.
Game 2 Recap - CMU 6, Miami 4
The Red & White got the scoring started with some two-out hitting in the top of the second. Harris got Miami a baserunner with two down after a single through the right side. Following a Spencer Dull hit by pitch, Landon Stephens singled to score Harris and give the `Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
Miami widened its margin in the third. With one out, Haffey and Yacek drew walks to put two on. After another out, Hall also walked to load the bases for Harris, who plated two with a double to left.
The RedHawks took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth but CMU would deadlock the game with a one-run double and a two-run single in the frame.
Two RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth gave the Chippewas their first lead of the contest at 5-3.
A Haffey inside the park home run brought Miami back to within one in the top of the seventh. However, in the home half of the eighth, CMU added an insurance tally with a sacrifice fly, giving it a 6-4 lead going into the ninth. The RedHawks got the bases loaded in their final chance at the plate but could not convert on the opportunity.
Like game one, both starting pitchers were tagged with a decision. Miami's Shane Smith (L, 1-1) went 4.2 innings and allowed all five runs on reght hits. CMU's Tyler Hankins (W, 2-0) tossed seven innings and surrendered four runs on five hits.
The two teams close the series on Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
