Byers and Gay Immobilize CMU in 6-1 Win

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami took care of Central Michigan Saturday, winning 6-1 after Alex Gay and Carson Byers combined for zero earned runs. Tommy Harrison was the offensive hero, hitting his team-leading 12th home run of the season to put the RedHawks ahead in the fifth. Miami improves to 28-13 (16-7 MAC) with the win, while Central Michigan falls to 18-22 (9-14 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gay sent down each of the three batters he faced in the top of the first, which included two strikeouts. The inning marked his first-ever start in a RedHawk uniform.
- The RedHawks took the lead in the bottom of the second. An HBP, a walk and a single by Evan Appelwick loaded the bases. With two outs, Marcus Dierks crossed home after Central Michigan threw a wild pitch.
- Gay held the Chippewas to one hit in the second and quickly recorded three outs, including one strikeout, to hold the one-run lead.
- Harrison made a diving catch in left-center to get Miami out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third.
- The Chippewas tied the game in the fourth, scoring after a two-base error by Miami. Byers had a one-two-three top of the fifth to hold the tie.
- The RedHawks put two on base in the bottom of the fifth with walks by Dierks and Appelwick. Harrison cleared the bases with his 12th home run of the season, which was a line drive over the right-field wall. This put the RedHawks ahead 4-1 headed into the sixth.
- Back-to-back innings where Byers only faced three batters in the seventh and eighth inning set Miami up to extend it's lead in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Novak hit a leadoff triple to right-center, which Ignacio Gonzalez followed up with an RBI double. Gonzalez advanced on a groundout and scored on a sac fly by Christopher Roa that made it a 6-1 ballgame.
- The Chippewas put up two hits in the ninth, but Byers and the defense recorded the final three outs to secure the series win.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Harrison finished with three RBI and a walk.
- Gay pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, holding Central to one hit while striking out four batters.
- Byers pitched 6.0 innings, holding Central to one unearned run and four hits while striking out eight batters.
- Miami outhit Central six to five.
- Gay and Byers combined for 12 strikeouts while Miami batters held Central Michigan to three.
- The RedHawks left five runners on base while Central left nine on base.
- Each team made one error.
