SAN DIEGO -- Although the offense was quiet for the first five innings, Miami University's softball team made a furious rally in the sixth to top Boston University, 9-4, Sunday morning in the closing game of the San Diego Classic at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
After starter Jaime Scher quickly retired the first two BU hitters in the first, a double and RBI single put the Terriers (6-8) on the board at 1-0. In the bottom half, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman singled to lead off, but a double play ended the inning without scoring for the RedHawks (7-11).
A leadoff single to begin the second led to BU eventually placing a runner on third base, but a strikeout by Scher avoided any further damage. In the top of the third, BU took advantage of a pair of walks with an RBI single to center that made it 2-0, forcing senior Kelsey Fredericks to relieve Scher. On her first pitch, Fredericks induced a double play ground-out that snapped the Terrier threat.
The RedHawks' offense struggled in the early innings following Schlattman's hit, mustering only a two-out walk in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, BU had runners at first and second with two outs, but a foul-out ended the inning. Junior center fielder Kaitlyn Gliha broke the offensive slump in the bottom half with a double to right-center, but was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Terriers extended their lead in the sixth with an RBI single that scored the runner from second, bringing the score to 3-0.
After five innings of offensive struggles, Miami exploded in the bottom of the sixth to take back the game, scoring nine runs against three different BU pitchers. Schlattman opened the frame by picking up her second hit of the day with a double to right-center, followed by freshman right fielder Haeley Tran reaching on a fielding error. Senior catcher Lauren Anderson finally put Miami on the board with an RBI single that scored Schlattman from second to make it 3-1. The rally continued as sophomore designated player Shannon Hohman reached on a fielding error, scoring Tran.
In the next at-bat, freshman second baseman Hannah Obrey tied the game at 3 with an RBI single to center that scored freshman pinch runner Kara Leckinger. Gliha then put Miami ahead, 4-3, with another RBI single to center that scored Hohman. Junior third baseman Kat Lee continued her outstanding weekend with a two-run double to right-center that made it 6-3. After a fielding error, Schlattman broke open the game with a three-run homer to right-center, extending the lead to 9-3. Tran tripled to right in the next at-bat, but Anderson would fly out to left and end the terrific inning.
Needing to rally, the Terriers responded with a quick double and two-run home run to left by sophomore catcher Alex Heinen that narrowed the margin to 9-5. After a single to center, Hohman relieved Fredericks and gave up a single that put two on with no outs. Hohman then settled in and got the final three outs to clinch the victory.
Schlattman finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and 3 RBIs, while Gliha batted 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. With 3.2 innings of work, Fredericks picked up the victory to improve to 3-5.
The RedHawks will now return to Oxford for their home opener, a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, March 7. The first game will begin at 5 p.m., with the second matchup following 30 minutes later. Both games will be streamed on MiamiRedHawks.com.
