Softball
Last Week: Miami (17-11 overall, 3-0 MAC) extended its winning streak to 11 with five victories this week against Northern Kentucky and Western Michigan. On Wednesday, the RedHawks' offense was held in check for the first four innings of the opener, but a pair of RBIs from sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman and junior outfielder Megan Wurts built a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth, eventually pulling away for a 6-1 victory over NKU. The Miami offense carried its momentum into the second matchup, scoring in each of the first four innings to seal an 8-0 run-rule result. (RECAP)
In Friday's MAC opener against Western Michigan, a season-high eight strikeouts from sophomore starter Shannon Hohman powered Miami to a 4-0 win that broke a seven-game losing streak to WMU. In Game 2, the Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame, but solid pitching from senior reliever Kelsey Fredericks allowed the RedHawks to rally in the fourth and fifth innings and take an 8-6 lead. Hohman returned to earn her second save of the season as the Red and White clinched the series in an 8-6 victory. (RECAP) On Saturday, WMU again struck early, but a team season-high five RBIs from senior left fielder Jenna Jones, including a three-run homer, powered Miami to an 11-3 run-rule victory. Hohman earned her third complete-game victory of the week, finishing with a 1.11 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 19.0 innings of work. For the week, four RedHawks batted .500, led by junior third baseman Kat Lee with seven hit and five RBIs. (RECAP) This Week: Miami continues conference play this weekend at Ball State. The RedHawks and Cardinals will face off on Friday at 3 p.m., before a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Tennis:
Last Week: Miami University women's tennis team opened up conference play with a 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois. The RedHawks took the doubles point thanks to Hannah Shteyn and Anastasiia Vasiukhina, who took down their NIU opponents 7-6 (7-6). With the doubles point secured, Miami (6-8, 2-0 MAC) roared into singles play as it clinched the dual with straight-set victories out of the bottom half of the lineup. Emily Struble dispatched Abigail Dekkinger (6-2, 6-2), Vasiukhina got past Walker (7-5, 6-0) and Shteyn took down Youel (6-3, 6-2).Andreea Badileanu battled back to win a three-setter against Chawafambira (4-6, 6-2, 10-8) and Anzhelika Shapovalova prevailed over Neely (6-3, 6-3) to round out the RedHawks' scoring on the afternoon (RECAP). Miami returned on Sunday to defeat Western Michigan, 6-1. The RedHawks handily took the doubles point despite a loss at No. 2.Claiming five of six singles flights for the second-straight outing. Shapovalova put the RedHawks back on top after she bested Olivia Myers in straight sets, (6-2, 6-3). Badileanu widened the gap to 3-1, handily taking down Fevralev (6-2, 6-2). Ponomareva battled it out in a heated match and ultimately came out on top after duking it out in a tiebreaker (6-4, 7-6 (7-5)). Vasiukhina brought her A-game to down Denise Azcui in a three-set match (2-6, 6-4, 6-2). Struble shutdown the Broncos with her win at No. 4 in another battle of a match (6-4, 2-6, 6-2) (RECAP). This Week:The Red & White return on Friday to take on Temple University in head-to-head action in Oxford, Ohio with the first serve going up at noon.
Golf
Last Week: Miami was idle. This Week: The RedHawks return to action this weekend at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Franklin, Tennessee. Miami will play one round each day, Friday through Sunday.
Baseball
Last Week: The Red & White (5-16, 1-2 MAC) played four contests this past week and went 1-3. Miami kicked off the slate with a home midweek battle against Northern Kentucky. The two teams entered the top of the ninth tied up at 3-all but the Norse struck for three runs in their half of the frame and held on to top the 'Hawks, 6-3 (RECAP). Miami closed a seven-game home stand with a three-game weekend series against Western Michigan, the team's first conference set of the season. The RedHawks opened on a strong note with a comeback win over the Broncos. MU struck for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to even the game at 3-3. Neither side could get on the board in the ninth, sending the 'Hawks to their first extra-inning affair of the season. In the bottom of the 10th, Steve Sada's walk-off single ended it as Dallas Hall came around to score from second (RECAP). Unfortunately, the RedHawks could not capitalize on the momentum as they dropped a pair of four-run decisions to WMU in a Saturday doubleheader. The Broncos took game one by a score of 8-4 before shutting out MU in the series finale, 4-0 (RECAP). This Week: The Red & White have a busy week ahead with five games on the schedule. The action gets started with a Tuesday road battle at NKU before returning home to host Xavier on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Miami will then hit the road for their first MAC road series of the 2017 campaign as the travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., to take on Central Michigan.
