OXFORD, Ohio -- In a pair of contrasting contests, Miami University's softball team opened its Mid-American Conference season with a doubleheader sweep of Western Michigan University Friday afternoon at the Miami Softball Stadium.

The RedHawks (16-11) rode a dominating pitching performance by sophomore Shannon Hohman to a 4-0 shutout victory in the opener before rallying to top the Broncos (12-13), 8-6, in the second matchup. Miami's wins snapped a six-game losing streak to WMU, with the Red and White prevailing for the first time since April 5, 2013.

Game 1 -- Miami 4, Western Michigan 0

Hohman came out firing in the early stages of Game 1, striking out five of the first six Broncos she faced, eventually finishing with a season-high eight punch-outs for the game.

In the bottom of the third, the RedHawks capitalized on a streak of good fortune, putting them on the board as consecutive errors at first base led to freshman designated player Hannah Obrey scoring on a fielder's choice. Following a passed ball, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman brought home senior second baseman Eryn McCarver with a sac fly. The surge concluded with a RBI single from junior right fielder Megan Wurts that scored freshman left fielder Haeley Tran to make it 3-0.

Miami added an insurance run in the fourth as junior third baseman Kat Lee doubled down the left field line to bring home junior pinch runner Alyssa Hedric from second, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Broncos' most substantial threat occurred in the top of the fifth when they placed runners at first and second with two outs, but a foul-out to sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl ended the frame.

In the top of the seventh, Hohman retired WMU in order to seal her second-consecutive shutout victory. The right-hander improved to 5-3 with the result, allowing only three hits in the outing.

Game 2 -- Miami 8, Western Michigan 6

After being held in check in the opener, WMU's powerful offense awakened in the top of the first, sending ten batters to the plate in a five-run frame. Following a leadoff double and RBI sac fly, junior center fielder Aspen Williams homered to right to make it 3-0. On the next at-bat, sophomore second baseman Brooke Wyman went yard with a shot to left-center, chasing senior starter Carly Mortensen for fellow senior Kelsey Fredericks. A RBI single to right tacked on another run to leave the score at 5-0.

In the bottom of the second, Miami broke through as junior catcher Rylee Whispel doubled to right, scoring Lee from first to make it 5-1.

Fredericks held off multiple threats from the Broncos in 4.1 innings, but they extended the lead to 6-1 with a fourth-inning home run to left.

Wahl catalyzed the Miami rally in the bottom of the fourth by homering to left on the first pitch of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Obrey singled to right, scoring Lee to narrow the margin to 6-3. Following a WMU pitching change, Schlattman singled to right to bring in Hedric, leaving the score at 6-4 WMU after four innings.

The RedHawks completed the comeback in the top of the fifth when Lee doubled to left-center, scoring two to tie the game at 6. After a Tran ground-out made it 7-6, Schlattman sealed the victory with a RBI double to right-center that scored McCarver.

WMU stranded runners in each of its final two outings as Hohman returned in relief to grab her second save of the season.

Lee finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Schlattman went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. For her effort, Fredericks earned the victory, improving her mark to 6-5.
