HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" With clutch offense and outstanding pitching performances, Miami University's softball team swept a doubleheader against Northern Kentucky University Wednesday afternoon at Grein Softball Field.
The RedHawks (14-11) have now won eight consecutive games as they head toward the beginning of Mid-American Conference play.
Miami 6, Northern Kentucky 1
After the RedHawks went down in order to begin the game, the Norse (5-17) threatened in the bottom half with runners on first and second with no outs, but a much-needed double play ended the frame without scoring.
Following a pair of quiet innings, NKU once again challenged in the bottom of the fourth with runners on first and second and one out, helped by a Miami error and walk. Senior starter Carly Mortensen closed out the frame with a pair of strike-outs that left the game scoreless.
In the top of the fifth, Miami's offense finally came through, beginning with a one-out single to center by senior second baseman Eryn McCarver. Following a walk to freshman left fielder Haeley Tran, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman put the RedHawks on the board with an RBI single to right. In the next at-bat, junior right fielder Megan Wurts continued the burst with an RBI double to left-center that scored Schlattman and Tran, bringing the score to 3-0.
NKU looked to respond in the bottom half of the fifth, but Mortensen once again induced two straight outs to keep the score at 3-0. In their next outing, the Norse earned a pair of walks that led to senior Kelsey Fredericks relieving Mortensen with one out in the inning. The first batter to face the righthander singled through the left side, bringing in a runner to make it 3-1. After a walk loaded the bases, a throw-out at home and a pop-up ended the inning without more damage.
Tran and Schlattman began the seventh with singles, with the bases eventually being loaded by a fielder's choice by senior Jenna Jones. Miami capitalized as senior catcher Lauren Anderson tacked on an insurance run with a sac fly to center that scored Tran. A pair of NKU miscues added more runs as an error scored Schlattman and a wild pitch brought home Jones to make it 6-1 Miami. In the bottom half, Fredericks quickly retired the Norse to seal the RedHawks' seventh-consecutive victory.
Schlattman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI with Gliha batting 2-for-4. With the victory, Mortensen improved to 3-1 while Fredericks picked up her third save of the year.
Miami 8, Northern Kentucky 0
Schlattman opened Game 2 with a double to center field, moving to third on a ground-out by Wurts before scoring on a Wahl sac fly. In the next at-bat, Gliha singled to right-center, advancing Anderson to third, allowing junior third baseman Kat Lee to drive in Anderson on a RBI single.
The Miami offense continued its strong start in the second as Tran singled to shortstop, followed by a Schlattman double to left-center. With two outs, an error by the NKU pitcher on an Anderson hit allowed both runners to score, making it 4-0 Miami.
In the top of the third, Lee doubled and quickly scored on an RBI single to right by freshman catcher Kara Leckinger. Following a wild pitch, Tran drove in Leckinger and McCarver with a two-run RBI double to center, bringing the score to 7-0 and forcing a NKU pitching change. In the bottom half, NKU had two runners on with two outs, but sophomore starter Shannon Hohman induced a foul-out to end the inning.
Wahl led off the fourth with a single and was replaced on the base path by freshman pinch-runner Hannah Obrey. With two outs, Obrey extended the lead to 8-0 as she scored on an error by the NKU shortstop. NKU threatened with a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom half, but a Hohman strikeout kept her shutout alive.
In the top of the seventh, Miami loaded the bases with two outs, but a strike-out ended the inning without insurance runs. In the bottom half, Hohman retired the Norse in order to wrap up a complete-game victory, improving her mark to 4-3.
Schlattman went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, giving her six hits for the afternoon. Lee also performed solidly, batting 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
