OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami University's softball team was unable to replicate its offensive firepower from Saturday, but strong pitching and timely hitting helped the RedHawks (12-11) take a pair of tight contests Sunday afternoon at the Miami Invitational presented by Best Western ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Sycamore Inn.
The sweep completed a perfect weekend for Miami, who has now prevailed in six consecutive contests. In the first matchup, a late surge propelled the RedHawks to a 4-1 victory over Detroit Mercy, while only one scoring inning proved to be enough to top Dayton, 3-2, in the tournament finale.
Miami 4, Detroit Mercy 1
Sunday's opener against the Titans (3-20) was far removed from the RedHawks' scoring display on Saturday, as Miami stranded nine batters in the contest.
Sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off the game with a double to left-center and eventually moved to third, but sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl was called out at first for leaving early, killing an early scoring chance.
After leaving two on in the top of both the second and third, Detroit Mercy struck with an RBI single that made it 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Miami responded in the next inning as junior third baseman Kat Lee doubled to left and was brought home on a RBI grounder by senior second baseman Eryn McCarver.
Both offenses quieted down until the top of the sixth when each team squandered runners in scoring position. In the seventh, Schlattman began the game-winning rally with a double to right, eventually being joined on the base path by senior left fielder Jenna Jones, who was hit by a pitch. With two outs, junior center fielder Kaitlyn Gliha singled to left, bringing in Schlattman and Jones to break the tie. In the next at-bat, Lee ensured a Miami victory with a single through the left side that scored Gliha to make it 4-1.
Senior Kelsey Fredericks earned the victory in relief, improving to 4-5 with the result. Fellow senior Carly Mortensen allowed three hits and struck out two over five innings. Lee finished 4-for-4 with a double and RBI, while Schlattman batted 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Miami 3, Dayton 2
In the premier matchup of the weekend, Miami was held mostly in check by Dayton starter Manda Cash, who threw six no-hit innings on Saturday and only allowed three from the Red and White.
The Flyers (12-11) came out hot against Fredericks, using three quick hits to build an early 2-0 lead, but the Miami starter induced a fly-out to stop further damage.
Schlattman finally put the RedHawks on the board in the third with an RBI double to right that scored McCarver from second. Junior right fielder Megan Wurts then concluded the day's scoring with a double to left-center that brought home two, making it 3-2 Miami.
Fredericks and Cash continued to duel, with the only threat coming from Dayton in the top of the fifth. Following a two-out single to right in the seventh, sophomore Shannon Hohman relieved Fredericks and struck out the UD batter to seal a narrow victory.
Fredericks evened her record to 5-5 with the win, while Hohman picked up her first save of the season.
For the weekend, Lee led all batters with a .643 batting average, nine hits and a .786 slugging percentage.
In Other Action
In the morning opener, Fort Wayne used a five-run first inning to take down Detroit Mercy, 10-5. In the other matchup, the Mastodons (6-22) rallied to tie Dayton in the sixth, but a throwing error led to a UD walk-off win.
Moving Forward
The RedHawks will head to Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, March 23 for a doubleheader against the Norse starting at 2 p.m. Miami will begin Mid-American Conference play next weekend with a home series against Western Michigan.
