Miami Overcomes 15-Point Deficit to Shock Akron, 79-75

AKRON, Ohio -- The Miami University men's basketball team saw itself down 15 on the road with 11:01 to go against Mid-American Regular Season Champion Akron, but an aggressive attack led by freshman guard Michael Weathers and some timely three-pointers from redshirt sophomore guard Jake Wright led the RedHawks to the 79-75 come-from-behind victory. Miami improves to 11-19 overall and 4-13 in the MAC. The Zips fall to 23-7 overall and 13-4 in the MAC.

Michael Weathers scored eight of his game-high 22 points during the `Hawks comeback. Wright drained five 3-pointers during the contest, finishing with 17 points. Miami shot 55.1 percent (27-for-49) from the field, including 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) from behind the arc.

A fast start saw Akron hit three early 3-pointers, but buckets from junior forwards Rod Mills Jr. and Logan McLane along with a three-pointer by freshman guard Milos Jovic saw the score tied at nine at the 16:01 mark. Mills drained a three-pointer of his own to give the RedHawks the lead at 14-13, but a 15-4 run by the Zips gave them a 28-18 lead with 8:29 to go.

Michael and Marcus Weathers each put in layups to help pull MU to within five, but Akron pushed the advantage back to 10 points at 34-24 with two minutes remaining. A three-pointer from redshirt Wright started a strong closing stretch for the `Hawks as a pair of steals and layups from Marcus Weathers and Jovic were part of a 9-4 run that cut the deficit at the half to five points at 38-33.

Michael and Marcus Weathers each put in layups, while McLane put down a dunk as the teams traded buckets to begin the second half. Another layup from Michael Weathers pulled Miami to within seven at 49-42 at the 15:30 mark. However, Akron answered with a 10-2 run that gave it a 59-44 lead with 11:01 to go, setting the RedHawks up for their big comeback attempt.

Two Wright three-pointers, followed by a couple of Weathers free throws made it a nine-point contest, but an Akron triple gave the Zips a 64-52 advantage at the 7:52 mark. Another three-pointer by Wright kept Miami's offense moving, while four free throws pulled the Red and White to within seven at 66-59 with 6:00 to go.

A layup by Michael Weathers was answered by two Zip free throws. Junior guard Abdoulaye Harouna then drained a key three-pointer that cut the deficit to four. After Jovic came up with a steal on Akron's next possession, he found Wright for yet another triple that made it a one-point game at 68-67 with 4:05 left.

Down 70-69, a steal from Harouna led to a fast-break dunk by Michael Weathers that gave Miami its first lead since it was 14-13 with 2:54 to go. The teams traded the advantage four more times until a layup by Marcus Weathers gave the RedHawks a 75-74 lead at the 48 second mark. Leading 76-75, Marcus Weathers calmly drained two more free throws to take a 78-75 lead with 17 seconds left. Akron's last ditch three-pointer went off the rim and Michael Weathers secured the rebound. He hit one final free throw to finish off the 79-75 win.

Michael Weathers had seven assists, four rebounds, one block and one steal to go with his 22 points in 36 minutes of action. Marcus Weathers finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Jovic scored nine for the RedHawks, while McLane had eight. Miami held a 27-23 advantage on the boards over Akron. The Zips were led by Antino Jackson with 12 points.

The RedHawks complete the regular season when they travel to Ohio Friday for their second "Battle of the Bricks" in as many weeks. The game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network and will feature a special start time of 6:30 p.m.
