CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami University's softball team stormed out to early leads against hosting North Carolina and Hampton, but fell in a pair of heartbreaking contests Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Carolina Classic at Anderson Stadium.

North Carolina 8, Miami 7

The top of the first started promisingly for Miami (5-7) as junior right fielder Megan Wurts reached on a throwing error, eventually making her way to third after a single by sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman. In the next at-bat, sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl doubled to left and brought in Wurts to make it 1-0 Miami. A walk to senior designated player Lauren Anderson loaded the bases, but Schlattman was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice. A fly-out stranded the three runners to end the inning.

In the bottom of first, the Tar Heels (9-4) led off with a single and eventually placed a runner on third, but freshman starter Jaime Scher was able to get out of the inning without allowing a score.

Junior third baseman Kat Lee singled to begin the second, which was followed by freshman center fielder Haeley Tran reaching on a misplayed sacrifice bunt, giving Miami two on with no outs. A Wurts bunt moved both into scoring position, allowing freshman second baseman Hannah Obrey to knock in Lee from third on an RBI single through the right side. Following a Schlattman walk, UNC made a pitching change and promptly exited the inning with a double play.

After UNC went down order in the bottom of the second, a trio of singles loaded the bases for Miami with two outs. Wurts capitalized with a double to left that scored Tran and senior left fielder Jones to bring the score to 4-0 Miami.

In the top of the fourth, the RedHawks continued to assert themselves with another offensive surge. Schlattman opened up with a double, followed by a two-run homer to left from Wahl that made it 6-0 Miami.

UNC was able to get a leadoff walk in its half of the fourth, but the runner was quickly thrown out at second on a fielder's choice and the Tar Heels quietly went down in order. The RedHawks threatened again in the top of the fifth as Tran doubled to center, followed by Wurts reaching on a fielding error, but the inning ended without scoring.

The Tar Heels finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as freshman right fielder Hailey Cole singled up the middle to score a UNC runner, but a pair of ground outs ended any further threat.

In the top of the sixth, Anderson singled to left and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Kara Leckinger. Following a double by junior catcher Rylee Whispel, Leckinger would score on a single to left-center by Jones, making it 7-1 Miami.

With senior Kelsey Fredericks replacing Scher in the sixth, UNC began its strongest challenge of the day to that point, using a pair of singles to put runners at first and third with two outs. After loading the bases, the Tar Heels narrowed the margin to 7-2 with a hit-by-pitch and scoring walk. In the next at-bat, Fredericks induced a ground-out and exited the frame with no further damage.

After Miami went down in order in the top of the seventh, UNC embarked on a game-winning rally. Following a leadoff single and a double to right, the Tar Heels had two runners in scoring position with no outs. Senior designated player Kendra Lynch took advantage with a one-out double to left-center that scored both runners and closed the score to 7-4.

Following a Miami error and a walk, the bases were once again loaded for UNC and sophomore Shannon Hohman entered the game for Fredericks. Hohman got an infield fly on her first pitch, but then surrendered a two-run RBI single that made it 7-6. With a walk and a single, the Tar Heels completed the comeback and tied the game at 7. In the next at-bat, junior shortstop Taylor Wike earned a bases-loaded walk and UNC took the 8-7 victory.

Wahl finished 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs while Schlattman batted 2-for-3 with a double. In a no decision, Scher allowed four hits and struck out three over 4.1 innings. The losing pitcher was Hohman, whose record dropped to 1-2 with the result.

Hampton 7, Miami 5

Looking to rebound from the tough loss to UNC, Wurts got the offense started early with a single up the middle and stolen base, eventually moving to third on an Obrey single. On the next pitch, Schlattman scored Wurts on a fielder's choice RBI, before moving to second after Wahl was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch and walk to Anderson loaded the bases with one out, allowing Hohman to score Wahl from third on a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the second, freshman right fielder Taylor Warrick hit a two-out single to center and advanced to third base on a stolen base and muffed throw. However, the Pirates (2-9) were unable to capitalize as the inning ended with a ground-out. In the bottom half, Lee led off with a double up the middle, but the rest of the Miami offense went down in order.

Hampton finally broke through in the top of the fourth when junior first baseman Jada Fields homered to left field, narrowing the margin to 2-1. The Pirates continued to threaten with a single and a walk, leading to junior pinch hitter Quierra Bradford doubling to right-center and bringing in two runs. On the subsequent pitch, junior second baseman Lorena Alvarez connected on an RBI single to left, extending the Pirates' lead to 4-2 and leading to Fredericks entering the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Lee reached on her second double of the contest and advanced to third on a Tran ground-out, but was unable to score. In the following inning, Hampton was able to load the bases and tacked on another run with a walk, causing Scher to enter the game in relief. She allowed a single on her first batter, extending the Hampton lead to 6-2.

Obrey and Schlattman led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles, but a double play stopped their momentum. Hampton almost added to its advantage in the top of the sixth with a two-out double, but the runner was thrown out at home to end the frame.

Lee continued her solid day with a walk to begin the sixth inning, eventually moving to second on a single by Tran. Both runners reached scoring position, but a batter's interference ended the sixth.

Hampton added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as sophomore catcher Ashley Grassini homered to center, bringing the score to 7-2.

Needing to rally, Schlattman started strong in the seventh with a leadoff double to right-center, followed by pinch hitter Whispel reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Hohman boosted the RedHawks with a three-run homer to right-center, making it 7-5, but two quick ground-outs ended the contest.

Lee finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Schlattman hit 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Hohman tallied 3 RBIs with her home run, but dropped to 1-3 with the loss. Over 3.2 innings, she struck out three and allowed seven hits.
