OXFORD, Ohio - In a game headlined by the teams trading runs, the Miami University RedHawks (10-18, 3-12 Mid-American Conference) came up one big run short as they fell to the Ohio University Bobcats (18-8, 10-5 MAC), 79-62 Tuesday night.
The RedHawks were led by junior forward Logan McLane who totaled 11 points on the night. Redshirt sophomore guard Jake Wright and freshman forward Marcus Weathers were the only two other scorers in double figures for Miami with 10 apiece.
The Bobcats were paced by Jason Carter who scored 25 points while also pulling down 11 rebounds. Jaaron Simmons also contributed in a big way, scoring 21 points on the night.
The game opened evenly at 4-4 with both teams committing four turnovers in the first 2:29. The period of sloppy play was quickly followed by a 9-0 run by the Bobcats stretching their lead to 13-4 with 14:14 left in the half. The Ohio run was fueled by a Miami scoring drought that lasted 3:26 before being broken by a McLane field goal with 14:03 to make the score 13-6.
The McLane field goal was the spark to a RedHawk 12-4 run that brought the score to 18-17 in favor of Miami with 8:40 left.
The Bobcats quickly responded and ended the half on a 21-4 run to take a 38-22 lead into halftime. The run was punctuated by a buzzer beater three-pointer from near half court by Jordan Dartis. The RedHawks failed to score over the last 2:38 of the half part of a 0-for-8 streak from the field.
The RedHawks shot 32 percent from the field and failed to connect on any of their seven three-point attempts. Freshman guard Michael Weathers led the team in the first half with eight points.
Ohio shot 54 percent from the field including 40 percent (4-of-10) from behind the arc. The Bobcats were paced in the first half by Carter with nine points.
The Bobcats built their lead to 44-27 to start the half, but the RedHawks responded with an 14-0 run fueled by the team's first three treys of the game, two from Marcus Weathers and one from Wright, to cut the lead to 44-41 with 12:22 left. The three-point deficit would be as close as the RedHawks would come the rest of the way.
Ohio would counter with yet another run, outscoring the RedHawks 20-4 to stretch their lead to 64-45 at the 7:16 mark. Miami would push back with a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 70-59 with 2:55 left, but Ohio shut down any potential comeback and pulled away to seal the win.
Miami shot 40 percent from the field including 31 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc. The Bobcats shot 54 percent from the field including 38 percent (8-of-21) from deep. Ohio would win the rebounding battle 37-27, while the RedHawks won the turnover battle 17-12.
With nine points in the contest, Michael Weathers broke the single-season freshman scoring record previously held by Trimill Haywood who scored 462 points in the 1986-87 season. He now has 463 on the season.
The RedHawks return to action Saturday when they host the Bowling Green State University Falcons at 3:30 p.m. This contest will not air on ESPN3, but a webcast will be part of the Miami College Sports Live subscription package.
