BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" After a heartbreaking loss to Belmont in the opener, freshman Jaime Scher's complete game against Western Kentucky helped Miami University's softball team split the second doubleheader at the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic.

Belmont 4, Miami 2

After the RedHawks (5-4) were retired in order to begin the first inning, the Bruins (7-0) were able to place runners on first and second, but a strike-out ended the frame without damage.

In the bottom of the second, Belmont struck first with a leadoff double that eventually led to a run on an RBI single two batters later. After Miami failed to reach base in the top of the third, Belmont used a double and a pair of walks to load the bases, forcing senior Kelsey Fredericks to enter the game in relief of sophomore starter Shannon Hohman. Fredericks was able to induce a fielder's choice that threw the lead runner out at home and allowed Miami to exit the frame without surrendering a run.

Miami's offense continued to struggle in the fourth, allowing Belmont to add to its lead to 2-0 with an RBI single.

Following a walk to begin the top of the fifth, the RedHawks' attack finally came alive as senior designated player Lauren Anderson homered to right-center, tying the game at 2. In the bottom half, a double and error gave the Bruins runners at first and third with one out. Although they were able to load the bases, Fredericks was able to get out of the inning with no runs.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Belmont got a full-count walk with one out, leading to a two-run home run by senior catcher Chelsey Deloney that gave it a 4-2 lead.

Needing two runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh, the RedHawks were retired in order and Belmont clinched the victory.

Anderson finished 2-for-3 with one home run and 2 RBIs, while Fredericks dropped to 2-3 on the season with the loss.

Miami 3, WKU 1

After Miami went down in order to begin the first, Scher took the mound as a starter for the first time in her collegiate career and promptly retired the Hilltoppers in order. Wahl opened the second with a walk and was moved to second on a single from Anderson. Following a fly-out to center by Obrey, Wahl advanced to third and subsequently scored on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0 Miami.

WKU mounted a scoring threat in the bottom of the third as a runner reached third, but Scher was able to evade damage as she got a full-count strikeout to end the frame.

In the top of the fourth, freshman left fielder Haeley Tran reached on an error and moved to second on a Schlattman single. Wahl then added to the Miami lead with a double to left-center that scored Tran and moved Schlattman to third. A walk to Obrey loaded the bases, allowing Hohman to score Schlattman on a fielder's choice RBI, making the score 3-0 Miami heading into the bottom half.

The Hilltoppers responded with a homer to left field by junior shortstop Brittany Vaughn that cut the deficit to 3-1. Later in the inning, a pair of singles gave WKU runners at first and second with two outs, but Miami was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.

In the top of the sixth, Anderson was hit by a pitch and replaced by freshman catcher Kara Leckinger as a pinch runner. An Obrey single and wild pitch gave Miami two runners in scoring position, but a double play ended the inning without insurance runs.

After being unable to score in the top of the seventh, the RedHawks went to the bottom frame looking to finish off the Hilltoppers and Scher quickly retired them in order.

In a complete game effort, Scher picked up her first career victory, giving up six hits and striking out three in the outing.

Moving Forward

Miami remains on the road next weekend for the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The RedHawks will face off against Marshall, Hampton, Towson and hosting North Carolina.
