Women's Basketball
Last Week: The RedHawks (9-16, 3-9 MAC) looked strong in two games of action this past week, beginning with a contest against Akron at home on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Kendall McCoy recorded her second double-double of the season as Miami took down the Zips, 54-49, in a defensive struggle (RECAP). The Red & White kept it rolling when they traveled to Eastern Michigan on Saturday. McCoy put up another solid game for MU, this time going for a career-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds. Three other RedHawks scored in double figures as Miami took down the Eagles, 79-63 (RECAP). This Week: The team returns home to host two games this coming week, the first on Wednesday against Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. It will be autograph night, where fans can get a picture and an autograph with their favorite RedHawks. Miami will then host Bowling Green on Saturday at 2 p.m. The contest represents the team's annual Love Honor Care game in support of the Luna Cares Fund, which helps raise money for local women and their families in the fight against cancer.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: The RedHawks (10-15 overall, 3-9 MAC) earned a split in a pair of home games. Miami was unable to overcome a tough shooting performance Tuesday evening as it fell to Western Michigan University, 72-55, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Millett Hall (RECAP). In a high-paced contest, junior forward Logan McLane scored a career-high 29 points to lead Miami to an 81-76 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday (RECAP). This Week: Miami hits the road for a pair this week. On Tuesday, the RedHawks travel to Kent State for a 7 p.m. tip. MU then heads to Buffalo Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. matinee.
Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks came out of their idle week with a trip to St. Cloud State. Both games took a familiar tenor as Miami took a second period lead only to enter the third period in a 1-1 tie both nights. On Friday, the Huskies scored twice in a 1:11 span early in the third and despite a late Kiefer Sherwood goal, an empty netter put the finishing touch on a 4-2 setback (RECAP). Saturday night saw Ryan Larkin make 33 saves to keep the contest tied in the late stages of the third period before a Jake Wahlin goal snapped a 1-1 tie with 2:47 left. SCSU added an empty netter again to prevail 3-1 (RECAP). This Week: Miami returns home for a showdown against first-place Denver. Friday's series opener begins at 7:35 p.m. and Saturday's finale is a later than normal 8 p.m. puck drop.
Softball
Last Week: The RedHawks opened their 2017 season with five games this past weekend at the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. On Friday, the Miami offense exploded early on against Butler, but the Bulldogs rebounded to eventually pull out a walk-off victory in a 13-12 shootout. In the second matchup of the day, the RedHawks were unable to recreate their earlier production, falling 8-0 in a six-inning game (RECAP). Miami would regroup and take the final three contests of the weekend, beginning with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. Sophomore Johniann Wahl's 3 RBIs powered a 4-2 win over IUPUI, while a three-run fourth inning allowed Miami to defeat Eastern Illinois, 6-2, in the nightcap (RECAP). On Sunday, the RedHawks lost a three-run lead, but a four-run rally gave them a 10-7 result against Green Bay in the tournament finale (RECAP). Junior transfer Megan Wurts posted a terrific debut for the RedHawks, batting .412 with seven hits and 5 RBIs. This Week: The RedHawks remain on the road this weekend as they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Western Kentucky University Invitational. Miami will face off against WKU, Western Illinois and Belmont in a pair of doubleheader matchups.
Golf
Last Week: The team was idle. This Week: The spring season begins with the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play tournament this Monday and Tuesday. The RedHawks will open with Eastern Michigan at 8 am on Monday and will face two more opponents during the event.
Swimming & Diving
Last Week: Miami University men's swimming and diving team defeated Ball State on Saturday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center by a score of 207.5-89.5. Lucas Brock placed first in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 20.82 seconds. Blackstone took second place with a time of 21.44. Brock was also victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (45.80) with Nick Ward finishing in second place (46.62). Blackstone earned another second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.96) while Steve Russo took third (2:09.24) (RECAP). This Week: Up next for Miami is the Mid-American Conference Championships. The women will compete on Feb. 22-25 and the men on March 1-4.
Tennis
Last Week: The RedHawks (1-4) had a busy weekend with two road matches in Louisville, Ky. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Miami played at a disadvantage this weekend with a player down due to illness. On Saturday, Miami fell to Georgia State, 6-1, with the only point coming from sophomore Emily Struble, who downed her opponent Lara Vovk in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) (RECAP). Miami returned the next day to round out the weekend with a match against Louisville. The Cardinals defeated the RedHawks, 6-1. Junior Nelli Ponomareva put the Red & White on the board with her win over UL's Sena Suswanm in a battle of a mach. Miami came out on top (6-1, 6-7 (7-10), 10-6) (RECAP). This Week: The RedHawks are back on home turf next weekend when they take on Eastern Kentucky at the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton, Ohio Feb. 17, at 4 p.m.
Track & Field
Last Week: The Miami University track and field team finished third after a multitude of impressive performances in their second day at the GVSU Big Meet. With just 31 points after the conclusion of Friday's action, the 'Hawks more than tripled their score on Saturday, finishing with 96 points on the weekend. The women's team grabbed second overall, while the men's team placed fifth. In total, six events were won by Miami student-athletes. On Friday, senior Amelia Strickler placed first in the shot put's invitational division with a 54-7.5, while fellow senior Alexus Jimson-Miller took first in the 60m hurdles open preliminary with an 8.44 to qualify for Saturday's finals. She then continued by winning the invitational group finals with an 8.46 (RECAP). Saturday's comeback effort included four additional first-place finishes. The 200m saw freshman Olivia Betchel finishing first in the 200m with a 25.08. Jimson-Miller followed up her first-place finish in Friday's 60m hurdle invite with a first place finish in the 60m hurdle open division. The senior turned in an 8.42 in Saturday's final. The final first-place winner was Arionna Darling in shot put. The senior recorded a put of 49-4.25. Freshman Jerimiah Hunter placed first with a 6.87 in the men's 60m open (RECAP). This Week: The 'Hawks have just one meet left before the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. Their last tune-up is the Alex Wilson Invitational from February 17-18.
