ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Miami University track and field team finished their first day at the GVSU Big Meet ranked eighth among 35 schools with 31 points.
"It was great to continue the momentum we had from last week," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny said following conclusion of action for the evening.
The success in Friday's meet began with sophomore Emily Fletchall, whose 11-6.25 in the pole vault, not only placed her eighth, but qualified her for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The rest of the field team, as has been the case all season, followed suit. Senior Martha Szekely grabbed second in the weight throw with a 58-8.50. The shot put cadre had all four women in action, with each of them placing in the top-eight in their respective fields. Senior Amelia Strickler placed first in the invitational with a 54-7.5, while Arionna Darling took sixth with a 49-1.75. In the open category, sophomore Katie Walter finished fifth with a 45-3.75. Right behind her was senior Ashley Frahm, whose 44-7.50 netted her eighth place.
The runners were again successful, led off with solid performances by senior Alexus Jimson-Miller in the 60m hurdles and sophomore Kalliopi Kountouri in the 400m dash. Jimson-Miller started by taking first in the 60m hurdles open preliminary with an 8.44 to qualify for Saturday's finals. She then continued by winning the invitational group finals with an 8.46. In the 400m, sophomore Kalliopi Kountouri's 56.73 was good enough to place her ninth.
The long distance group was led by senior Maria Scavuzzo, whose 9:36.47 earned her second in the 3000m. This time was just five seconds off the school record, placing her third in Miami history. Her cross country teammate, Carly Davis, also represented Miami in the top-20. The freshman placed 19th, clocking in with a 9:55.77. Running in the 5000m, junior Sarah Starrlett (17:36.07) and sophomore Haley Sandvik (17:46.65) took 14th and 19th, respectively. The one mile saw junior Alesha Vovk finishing 11th with a 4:57.01. Of thirteen distance girls racing, all but one recorded new personal records.
On the men's side, sophomore Jake Owens took fifth in the 400m with a time of 48.44. Stephen Biebelhausen turned in a 4:11.61 in the one mile to place twelfth. Junior Jake Brumfield finished 19th in the 3000m with a personal-best time of 8:29.68.
