LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount rallied to top Miami, 84-71, in a tale of two halves on Friday evening inside Gersten Pavilion. The RedHawks led 42-33 at the half but the Lions erupted for 51 second-half points to steal the victory.
Lauren Dickerson led MU with 25 points and eight assists. Leah Purvis, Baleigh Reid and Savannah Kluesner each scored in double figures as well with 15, 10 and 10 points, respectively. The `Hawks finished the contest shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 59.1 percent from beyond the arc. Dickerson and Purvis combined to knock down 11 three-pointers.
The Red & White scored the game's first two baskets and didn't look back as they led the entirety of the first half. Back-to-back three pointers from Purvis and Dickerson and a layup by Kluesner had the MU lead built to 12-4 with just under four minutes gone in the opening quarter. However, the Lions fought back in the moments following and eventually tied things up at 15-all with 2:48 to play in the frame. Two-straight triples from Dickerson and a jumper by Kluesner, followed by a LMU layup, had the score at 23-17 in favor of the `Hawks after 10 minutes of play.
Miami and LMU traded chances over the first few minutes of the second quarter but the RedHawks eventually built their lead to a game-high 13 points behind a Kendall McCoy jumper and a Dickerson layup and three-pointer. With 4:04 to play in the first half, MU was maintaining a 40-27 margin. Both teams cooled off form the field as only eight more points were scored the final four-plus minutes. The Red & White entered the locker room with a 42-33 advantage.
The second half belonged to the Lions, who scored 51 points over the final 20 minutes of action to Miami's 29. LMU shot 53.8 percent in the half behind 34 points in the paint. The RedHawks were able to keep the lead through three quarters but the Lions wasted little time moving in front in the fourth period, going up 57-56 just 13 seconds in. LMU gradually built its lead and finished the game on a strong run to seal the win.
Miami gets right back at it as it takes on Denver on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
