OXFORD, Ohio -- Scott Dornbrock posted his fourth career multi-point game and the Miami hockey team used a hot start to top Connecticut, 3-0, at Steve `Coach' Cady Arena on Friday night.
Miami (2-3) scored three goals in the first 9:07 to post its first shutout of the season.
The Huskies went on the attack early thanks to a RedHawk penalty 28 seconds in that gave them a power play. Miami's penalty killing was on point, allowing just one long distance shot on goal to keep the game scoreless.
After killing the penalty off, MU wasted little time establishing itself in the offensive zone. Karch Bachman nearly put Miami on the board when he walked in tight on Adam Huska, but the Huskies' goalie got a pad on the shot. The RedHawks remained on the attack and eventually Carson Meyer redirected a Scott Dornbrock point shot that raced into the top corner of the net. Meyer's first goal of the season put the RedHawks on top just 3:52 in with Bachman also drawing an assist on the tally.

Dornbrock got into the scoring himself just 1:36 later when he crept in from the left point and one-timed a feed from Casey Gilling top shelf for his first tally of the season. Zach LaValle also drew a helper on the goal that added a little breathing room for the Red & White. A Gordie Green tally made it 3-0 with just 9:07 gone by as he benefitted from solid cycling by his line mates Josh Melnick and Ben Lown as they worked the puck to Green in the middle and he wristed home his third goal of the season.

Miami killed off another UConn power play in that period to keep the three-goal lead intact after 20 minutes. Shortly after the Huskies' man advantage, Ryan Larkin came up with a big point blank stop to keep them off the board.

The pace of play slowed down a bit in the second period with Miami outshooting Connecticut by a 9-7 count. A transition rush by Miami midway through the frame nearly ended with Dornbrock's second goal of the game as Conor Lemirande fired a shot off Huska's pad, but the rebound was fired high. Both teams had a power play in the middle stanza, but the penalty kill units held serve as MU remained ahead by three through two periods.
Miami continued to lock it down defensively in the third period, holding UConn to just four shots in the final 20 minutes as they secured Larkin's second career shutout.
The RedHawks outshot the Huskies 33-19 for the night while both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Larkin turned aside all 19 shots he faced while Huska made 28 saves on 31 shots while Tanner Creel made two more saves in the final 4:51.
These teams wrap up the weekend series on Saturday. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
