
Hall of Famer Bob Brown Passes Away

MISSOURI CITY, Texas—Miami University Athletics Hall of Famer Bob Brown, one of the first two men’s basketball players to capture First-Team All-Mid-American Conference honors, passed away Thursday morning (July 28). He was 92.
Brown, a 1949 Miami University graduate, played for the Red and White in 1942-43 and from 1946-49. A center/forward, Brown earned All-Ohio honors in 1947 and 1948. He also was selected to the Converse All-America Team and was an Honorable Mention Chuck Taylor All-America pick. Brown and Paul Schnackenberg became the first in a long line of All-MAC honorees for the Red and White with their selection to the first team in 1948.
He was the first 1,000-point scorer on record for the Red and White and finished his career with a then-Miami record of 1,277 points, a mark that currently ranks 16th on its all-time scoring list. In 1946-47, Brown scored 437 points—an average of 19.0 ppg—and ranked fifth in the nation in scoring. In total, he finished with 505 career field goals and posted a 16.0 ppg scoring average for his career.
Following his stellar career at Miami, Brown went on to play for the National Basketball Association’s Providence Steam Rollers (1948-49) and was on the original Denver Nuggets team (1949-50). He played in 82 NBA games, including 62 for the Nuggets. He wrapped up his professional basketball career with the National Professional Basketball League’s (NPBL) Denver Refiners in 1950-51.
Brown was inducted into the Miami Athletics Hall of Fame in 1972.
