BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Miami University softball team completed a weekend sweep of Buffalo by winning a doubleheader on Saturday. The RedHawks took the opener, 6-2. MU then had an offensive explosion led by five home runs and freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl's career-high six RBIs to take a 16-5 win in the nightcap. That game ended after six innings due to the run rule. The `Hawks finish the regular season at 30-21 overall and second in the Mid-American Conference with a 15-7 record. The Bulls conclude their season at 17-37 overall and 9-14 in the MAC.

Miami took control of the opener with three runs in the top of the third inning. Junior second baseman Eryn McCarver and senior outfielder Taylor Shuey led off with back-to-back singles. A single to leftfield by Wahl loaded the bases with no one out. After Buffalo got a force out at home, senior outfielder Hailey Reed singled through the right side to score Shuey. A bases loaded walk by junior catcher Lauren Anderson forced home Wahl. A groundout by freshman pinch-hitter Hannah Girlie scored sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Gliha to make 3-0 in favor of the RedHawks.

Junior pitcher Carly Mortensen kept the Bulls without a hit through the first three innings. When they got a pair of runners on and no one out in the bottom of the fourth, senior Amber Logemann came on in relief. The Bulls got on the board after a wild pitch, but the damage was limited to that and it was 3-1 after four complete innings.

The `Hawks put the game away with three runs in the top of the fifth. Gliha reached on an infield single. Reed put down a sacrifice bunt, but the ball was thrown away giving Miami runners on second and third with no one out. One batter later, a single by sophomore third baseman Kat Lee scored both runners and made it 5-1. A double to right center by sophomore catcher Rylee Whispel scored Lee and completed the RedHawks scoring.

Buffalo would score one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but Logemann shut down the Bulls the rest of the way to secure the 6-2 victory.

Lee finished the opener 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Whispel was 2-for-2 with one RBI. Logemann picked up the victory, allowing one run on two hits in 3.1 innings pitched.

The nightcap did not look like it was going to be a good game for the Red and White as Buffalo took advantage of two Miami errors and a wild pitch, while using two of its own hits to take a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

The RedHawks showed that it was going to be their day at the plate with eight runs in the top of the second. All of the runs were scored courtesy of four home runs. With Gliha and Wahl on base, Anderson got things started with a three-run shot. After Whispel walked, Lee hit a two-run home run to give Miami its first lead at 5-4. Freshman Michaela Schlattman made it back-to-back homers with a deep one over the centerfield wall. She became only the second player in school history to hit 10 home runs in a season. After a walk to McCarver, Wahl began what would turn into an unbelievable game with a two-run home run to make it 8-4.

With one out in the top of the third Lee hit her second home run of the game, the fifth overall for Miami, to increase the advantage to five. The Bulls followed by giving up three straight walks to load the bases. Wahl then singled to centerfield to score Schlattman and McCarver and give the RedHawks an 11-4 lead.

Buffalo got one back in the bottom of the third, but in the top of the fifth Wahl doubled home Shuey to return the advantage to seven at 12-5.

Miami put the game away via the run-rule with four runs in the top of the sixth. Lee reached on an infield single, while Schlattman was safe on an error. Girlie put down a sacrifice bunt, but the ball was thrown away and both Lee and Schlattman scored. Wahl singled up the middle for yet another RBI as Girlie came home. Freshman Shannon Hohman pinch-hit and completed the RedHawks scoring with a single to right field that scored Wahl.

Wahl set single-game career-highs in hits, RBIs and runs scored by finishing 5-for-5 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Lee also had an amazing day at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Anderson was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Schlattman finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Junior pitcher Kelsey Fredericks picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in six innings pitched.

The RedHawks will be the second seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament and will take on seventh seed Toledo in its first game on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Check back with MiamiRedHawks.com later Saturday evening for the complete MAC Tournament pairings.
