TOLEDO, Ohio - A trio of Miami track and field competitors finished runner-up as the RedHawks wrapped up the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
The Miami men took fifth in the meet with 55 points while the women nabbed eighth with 45 points.
Matt Owens got the Miami men on the board in the morning when he cleared 15-6 1/4 to place fourth in the pole vault. In other morning field events, Jess Baker narrowly missed contributing points when she made it through the opening height of 5-3 1/4, which was tied for the seventh best recorded on the day. However, she fell short of scoring due to a tiebreaker on attempts. Owens also led off the men's 4x100m relay with Jake Owens, Kenny Glenn and Adam Bodrick following. The group took sixth in the relay with a time of 41.62.
The RedHawks' field performers were led by Peter Stefanski, who cleared 6-9 to nab runner-up in the high jump and earn Second-Team All-MAC honors.
On the track, Alexus Jimson-Miller stole the show for the Miami short sprints and hurdlers. The junior set a new personal-best in the 100m hurdles, finishing in 13.53 and falling just six thousandths of a second short of Akron's Dara Perry. Still, Jimson-Miller's performance netted her a runner-up finish and Second-Team All-MAC status while pushing her up to 35th in the East Region at the time of the meet's completion, likely earning her a bid to the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet. Also earning Second-Team All-MAC honors was Andrew Dusing, who was the runner-up in the men's 1500m with a time of 3:48.59. Fellow RedHawk Stephen Biebelhausen also added a point in that event by taking sixth (3:53.51)
Also scoring individually on the track were a pair of 400m hurdlers in both races. For the men, Vinnie Minosky took bronze with a third-place time of 52.59 while Aaron Muresan posted a personal-best 54.45 to take sixth and chip in a point. On the women's end, Kathie Wollney clocked 1:00.33 to claim fourth place while Morgan Rice's time of 1:02.93 nabbed seventh. The middle distance also contributed to the women's scoring as both Megan Beaver (2:13.27) and Laura Bess (4:31.65) posted sixth-place finishes in the 800m and 1500m, respectively.
The final individual race of the day was the 5000m and both sides got points out of their distance units. Both Joe Stewart (third; 14:47.14) and Zack McBride (sixth; 14:58.06) scored, combining for seven points. Maria Scavuzzo added a point to the women's total with a time of 17:12.59
Miami will now scour the regional rankings and await word on which of its competitors will compete in the NCAA East Region Preliminary on May 26.
