DAYTON, Ohio - The scoring chances were aplenty for both Miami and Dayton, but it was the Flyers that converted more of their oppotunities, defeating Miami 11-8 Tuesday evening. The loss drops the Red & White's record to 5-5 on the season.
The Flyers got things started offensively in their first at bat. Their three runs came on a bases loaded walk, a single and a sac fly.
Miami responded by getting on the board in the top of the second. With one down, Kyle Winkler got hit by a pitch to put a man on. Then, after a Dallas Hall single that put two ducks on the pond, Julian Flanary crushed his first career home run over the left center wall, knotting things up at three apiece. However, Dayton wasted no time in regaining the lead. In the home half of the second, the Flyers got a homer of their own, a two-run shot.
Dayton widened their lead int he bottom of the fourth. A one-run double to to center and a wild pitch allowed the Flyers to plate two in the frame, giving them a 7-3 lead through four.
The RedHawks got a run back in the top of the fifth. With one down, Flanary walked and then Steve Sada earned a bunt single. With runners on first and second, Adam Yacek drilled a single through the left side, scoring Flanary. Dayton regained their four-run edge in the home half of the fifth, scoring on a double to left center. After five innings played, the Flyers held an 8-4 advantage.
Miami got it back to within three in the top of the seventh. Flanary and Sada led things off with back-to-back singles then, after an out, Ross Haffey singled to center, allowing Flanary to touch home plate. Again, Dayton responded in their very next chance at the plate. A leadoff solo shot put them back up by four at 9-5.
The Red & White battled right back in the away half of the eighth. After a quick out, Hall knocked a single to right center. That was followed by a double to right by Hayden Senger that allowed Hall to come all the way around from first to score. After another out, Sada walked. Then, both Yacek and Haffey reached on an error, allowing both Senger and Sada to score. The RedHawks then loaded the bases but UD got a pop-up to neutralize MU's opportunity to tie or take the lead. Each time the RedHawks scored in their chance at the plate, Dayton answered. The eighth was no exception as they tacked on two insurance runs to grab an 11-8 lead.
Miami got two men on in the top of the ninth but they could not complete the rally. The RedHawks now shift their focus to Wednesday and their 2016 home opener. It will be Dayton and Miami once again with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
