COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A consistent offensive effort coupled with a sharp day defensively spelled good things for the Miami baseball team as they picked up their third-straight victory with a 9-4 win over Tennessee Tech Friday.
For the third-straight game, Miami was able to get things going offensively in their opening at bat. With two out, Ross Haffey waited for his pitch and took it opposite field for his third home run in the last three games.
Miami doubled their lead in the top of the third. With one already down, Jake Romano worked a base on balls and wasted no time stealing second, getting himself into scoring position. It turned out to be a fruitful decision as Tyler Harris singled through the right side, allowing the speedy Romano to come around and score. Miami held a 2-0 edge after two and half innings of play.
The Red & White extended their lead again in the top of the fourth. With one down, Adam Yacek ripped a double down the left field line then, after another out, Dallas Hall singled to right, allowing Yacek to score from second. The RBI was the first of Hall's young career.
Miami widened their advantage once again in the top of the fifth. With two out, Steve Sada kept the inning alive by earning a walk. Then, after Sada stole second, Harris turned on one and notched his first home run as a RedHawk, a shot over the left field wall.
TTU got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Two homers cut the Miami lead to 5-3 through six innings of play.
The Red & White responded by getting one back in the top of the seventh. With two out and Harris at the plate, the TTU pitcher threw a wild pitch, allowing Hall, who had reached on a single, to score from third. Hall had gotten to third on a double by Romano. The Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, a solo shot to left.
Miami pushed their lead back to five in the top of the eighth. After back-to-back walks by Haffey and Gary Russo to open the frame, Yacek laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance them both. That's when Chad Sedio collected his second home run of the season, a three-run shot that cleared the right field wall with room to spare. That gave Miami their 9-4 lead.
The RedHawks got a solid outing from freshman pitcher Michael Hendricks, who made his first collegiate start Friday. The righty went five and two-thirds innings, striking out two and allowing three runs. Brad Schwartz pitched the final three and one-third innings, allowing just one run and striking out two to earn the save, his first of the season.
Miami returns to the diamond Saturday as they look to take the series win against the Golden Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
