INDIANAPOLIS -- The Miami University softball team split a doubleheader on the road against Butler on Tuesday. The RedHawks offense came alive in a 12-3 victory in the opener. The Bulldogs then used one big inning to earn a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Miami is now 10-11 on the season, while Butler is 15-12.
Freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off the opener with her seventh home run of the season. Her line shot gave Miami a 1-0 advantage heading to the bottom of the first
of the season. Miami loaded the bases in the top of the second. Schlattman and senior outfielder Taylor Shuey drew back-to-back walks to force home two runs and tie the score at three.
The RedHawks took the lead with four runs in the top of the third. Junior designated player Lauren Anderson led off by being hit by a pitch and was replaced by freshman pinch-runner Chloe Melanson. After Butler recorded two outs, junior outfielder Jenna Jones drew a walk. A single to leftfield by sophomore catcher Rylee Whispel brought home Melanson and made it 4-3. Junior second baseman Eryn McCarver singled up the middle to score Jones. Schlattman followed with a triple to right center that cleared the bases and put Miami on top, 7-3.
It remained that way until the `Hawks broke it open with five runs in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no one out, freshman Shannon Hohman pinch-hit and singled to leftfield to score sophomore third baseman Kat Lee and sophomore Kaitlyn Gliha. Freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Whispel and make it 10-3. A double to right center by Anderson scored Shuey and McCarver to complete Miami's scoring and give it a 12-3 win.
Schlattman finished the opener 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs and one run scored. Anderson and Hohman each drove in two RBIs for the RedHawks.
The nightcap started off strongly for Miami as Schlattman and Shuey led off with back-to-back singles. After two outs were recorded, Reed followed with her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot over the centerfield wall that gave the `Hawks a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the top of the fourth, freshman second baseman Hannah Girlie hit a single through the left side. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Tanya Busby moved Girlie up to third. She then scored on a single up the middle from Schlattman that made it 4-0.
Meanwhile, junior Carly Mortensen kept Butler without a hit for her first 4.1 innings of work. In the bottom of the fifth, a hit batsman, along with the Bulldogs first two singles loaded the bases with one out. A triple would clear the bases, while a double with tie the score at four. Butler got one more single to drive in another run and take a 5-4 advantage.
The RedHawks did not give up as Shuey led off the top of the seventh with a double, while Wahl drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Anderson moved them up to second and third with only one out. Unfortunately, Miami was unable to drive them in, allowing the Bulldogs to hang on for the win.
Shuey finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with one run scored, while Schlattman was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Reed finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
