OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior hockey goalie Jay Williams and the entire Collegiate Synchronized Skating Team are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 22-28.
Williams had a perfect senior weekend, posting a pair of shutout victories to keep Miami in a fourth-place tie in the NCHC entering the final regular season weekend. The McLean, Va., native made 18 of his 31 saves in the third period of Friday's 3-0 victory over Colorado College as he helped Miami kill off seven power plays (four in the third). He was sharp again the next night, knocking away 24 shots to post his second-straight shutout and second of the season. Since Jan. 3, Williams is 10-3-1 with a 1.87 goals against average and a .929 save percentage.
This is the second time this season and sixth time in his career that Williams has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Jan. 4-10.
A strong performance propelled the Miami University collegiate synchronized skating on Saturday at the U.S. National Championships as the RedHawks seized their 12th-consecutive national title. Heading into the competition, Miami's collegiate program already owned a U.S. Figure Skating record for most consecutive national titles in any discipline at any level of skating and extended that record on Saturday. The RedHawks won the program's 18th overall collegiate national crown. With their program set to a USA them, the collegiate team had a clean skate and amassed a season-high score of 90.12 to finish first among the 12-team field. They amassed a program component score of 52.91 and an executed element score of 37.21.
This is the first time this season and seventh time overall that the Collegiate Synchronized Skating Team has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, March 7.
