CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Miami University softball team earned a split on the opening day of the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Friday. The RedHawks knocked off Evansville, 2-1, in a hard-fought contest in the morning. They then fell to 18th-ranked Kentucky, 8-0. That game ended in six innings due to the run rule. Miami is now 3-3 on the season.
The RedHawks got going quickly in their opener against Evansville (8-3 overall), scoring both of their runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off with a walk. Sophomore designated player Kaitlyn Gliha reached after her sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away by the defense. Both runners stole a base, and then senior outfielder Taylor Shuey drove home Schlattman on a sacrifice fly. After an out was recorded, freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl hit a single down the leftfield line to score Gliha and make it 2-0.
That would be all senior pitcher Amber Logemann would need. Evansville scored a run in the bottom of the first off a single, a pair of stolen bases and a wild pitch. Logemann settled down from that point on, allowing only three more hits the rest of the contest. The Purple Aces only got another runner to third in the bottom of fifth inning, but Logemann struck out the next batter to end the threat.
Logemann allowed only one run on four hits while striking out 10 for the complete game win. Sophomore catcher Kat Lee and junior second baseman Eryn McCarver also had hits for Miami. One poor inning for the RedHawks made the difference against Kentucky (11-2 overall) in the nightcap. The Wildcats scored seven runs off five hits and an error in the bottom of the second to break the game open. Freshman pitcher Shannon Hohman came into the game in relief and pitched well, shutting down UK until a triple and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth plated the run that earned the Wildcats a run-rule victory. Hohman allowed two runs on three hits in four innings pitched.
Kentucky's pitching kept the Miami bats quiet on Friday. Shuey recorded the RedHawks' only hit with a single to centerfield in the top of the first inning.
Miami continues play at the Frost Classic with two games on Saturday. At 11 a.m., the `Hawks take on Northern Kentucky. They then face the host of the tournament, Chattanooga, at 1:30 p.m.
