Miami Takes on Day One Of the MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio - The Miami RedHawk women's track and field squad kicked off competition at the Mid-American Indoor Championships Friday.
Day one's highlight happened on the final running event of the day as the RedHawks' distance medley relay squad of Alesha Vovk, Kathie Wollney, Megan Beaver and Laura Bess set a new school record 11:35.42 to finish second. Their combined time beat the old record set in 1997 by .13 seconds and earned all four a spot on the All-MAC Second Team.
In the first running event of the day, Alexus Jimson-Miller posted a time of 8.57 in the 60m hurdles to take the second qualifying spot in tomorrow's finals. In the 400m, Kathie Wollney nabbed the last qualifying spot by posting an all-time best time 55.65 to qualify eighth. Fellow RedHawk Kalliopi Kountouri finished 13th in with a personal-best 56.24.
Wollney nearly earned a spot in the 800m finals as well, coming up one place short after finishing ninth with a personal and team-best time of 2:12.05. Alexis Szivan finished the day 11th with a personal-best 2:13.50 and Megan Beaver was 16th in 2:15.66.
Maria Scavuzzo took on the 5000m for the Red and White finishing 17th with a time of 17:44.95.
In field action, the weight throw saw Martha Szekely finished 10th marking 55-11.25. Katie Walter was 17th with her mark of 50-9.5 and Ashley Frahm was 20th with a throw of 45-9.75. In the long jump Caitlyn Redmon finished 19th with a mark of 17-9.
After one day of competition the RedHawks sit ninth with eight points. Day two of competition will begin for the RedHawks at 1 p.m. with the high jump.
