BUIES CREEK, N.C. - It was a close one but the Miami baseball team locked it down in the final innings to collect a 5-4 victory over Campbell Sunday afternoon. The win improves Miami's record to 1-2 after the first weekend of play.
The RedHawks opened the scoring in the top half of the second. Chad Sedio led off the inning with a hit by pitch, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by CU's catcher. After Ross Haffey earned a walk, Gary Russo grounded into a double play, allowing Sedio to score from third.
Miami led 1-0 until back-to-back base knocks thrusted Campbell in front, 2-1, in the bottom of the third. A two-out solo shot doubled the Camels' lead in the bottom of the third.
The Red & White got a quick start to the sixth inning as Steve Sada and Adam Yack both reached base safely to start the frame. After an out, Haffey doubled down the right field line, scoring Sada. With two men on, Russo picked his pitch and lifted the ball over the left field wall, and then some, putting Miami back in front, 5-3.
Campbell cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth as they plated one on a single through the left side. However, that was as close as they would get as Ryan Marske came on in the ninth and earned the save. Also appearing out of the pen today were Michael Hendricks and Andy Almquist. Hendricks, who picked up his first collegiate win, tossed three and a third innings of solid ball and allowed just one hit and a run. He also struck out three. Almquist pitched just a third of an inning, but got Miami out of a jam in the eighth when he got a ground ball that ended the Campbell threat.
Freshman southpaw Zach Spears made his first collegiate start on the mound for the RedHawks Sunday. He tossed four and a third innings, struck out five and allowed three runs. He also picked off two CU baserunners and was able to catch another stealing with his pickoff move. Overall, a good first outing for the newcomer.
The RedHawks are back in action next weekend as they travel to compete in the Mule Mix in Nashville, Tenn.
