OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University women's basketball team fell 70-46 Saturday afternoon to the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Millett Hall. The contest was Miami's annual Love Honor Care game to benefit the Luna Cares Foundation.
Luna Cares is a non-profit organization that was created in Oxford to support local women and their families following the diagnosis of cancer. Luna Cares helps offset costs of treatments, doctor visits, co-pays and deductibles, hospital stays, surgeries, counseling and also provides wellness baskets for incoming oncology patients. Those baskets include free wigs, scarves, turbans, etc. Stay tuned to MiamiRedHawks.com for updates on fundraising goals for the event.
The loss drops Miami to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in Mid-American Conference play. EMU moves to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in MAC play.
Miami was led in scoring by freshman guard Leah Purvis, who finished with 14 points. Freshman forward Kendall McCoy had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
EMU raced out to an early 18-9 advantage to open the contest, but a jumper by Molly McDonagh, followed by a pair of free throws from the sophomore cut the Eagles' lead to 18-13 after the first quarter of action.
The Eagles opened the second quarter with a triple that was answered by a three-pointer from Purvis to cut EMU's lead to five, 21-16. A 14-4 run from the Eagles to end the quarter sent the two teams to the locker room with EMU holding a 35-20 advantage.
EMU held a 60-30 advantage after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, the RedHawks were able to hit some outside shots, led by two 3-pointers from Purvis, but the Eagles were able to finish off the 70-46 win.
Miami shot 36.0 percent (18-for-50) for the game, while holding Eastern Michigan to 37.0 percent (27-for-73) shooting. The RedHawks held a 42-40 advantage in rebounding, but were hurt by a season-high 29 turnovers.
Miami returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in a trip to Athens, Ohio for a 7 p.m. tip versus the Ohio Bobcats. The game will air live on the American Sports Network, as well as ESPN3.
