OXFORD, Ohio -- Anthony Louis provided the Miami hockey team a shot in the arm at the beginning and end of its series opener against Colorado College on Friday night.
Louis scored the RedHawks' lone goal in a 1-1 tie with the Tigers and his shootout tally gave them two out of three points in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference standings.
Miami (3-8-5, 0-4-3-1 NCHC) went on the power play 24 seconds in, but could not generate much offense on the man advantage with a close range shot by Conor Lemirande that Alex Leclerc stopped representing the lone scoring opportunity for the Red and White. Undeterred, the RedHawks got on the board 3:16 in as Carson Meyer gained possession at the right circle before feeding Louis at the back door for his 10th goal of the season. Kiefer Sherwood also picked up an assist on the opening tally.
The RedHawks got one more power play to no effect in the period with Ryan Larkin making a shorthanded stop on a partial breakaway by Matt Hansen. The Red and White killed off one Tiger man advantage late in the frame. CC had a slim (9-8) shot advantage, but Louis' goal was the only on the board at intermission.
Colorado College (3-11-1, 1-5-1-0 NCHC) went on the power play just 25 seconds into the middle frame, but Miami had the better of the opportunities while shorthanded and ultimately maintaining its one-goal lead. Karch Bachman had a chance to bump MU's lead to two with a partial breakaway from the defensive blue line in, but he was driven wide by Leclerc and ultimately fired his shot off target.
Play picked up for the Red and White offensively as they started stringing together shifts in the offensive zone. That pressure nearly created a goal twice in a minute as a point shot was redirected by Ryan Siroky past Leclerc, but off the post. Later, Conor Lemirande fired a shot off Leclerc's pad and caromed right to Josh Melnick, whose rebound attempt also drew iron.
The Tigers picked things up after withstanding that surge and eventually tied the score with 3:36 left in the frame when the puck got to Luc Gerdes at the half wall, where he wired a shot that tricked Larkin and went in to make it 1-1. That's where the score stood through two periods of play.
Miami ended up with a 10-6 shot advantage in the third period and both teams had a power play in the final regulation frame, but neither team could find the scoresheet as the game wore on into overtime. The Tigers had a 3-2 edge in shots in the 5-on-5 overtime and went on the power play with 2:37 left to try and win the game outright. The Red and White were again up to the task on the penalty kill, allowing just one shot on goal during that span to preserve the tie.
After skating to another scoreless overtime period at 3-on-3 play, the contest moved on into a sudden death shootout. That session was done in the blink of an eye as Louis worked a series of dekes before scoring on his attempt while Larkin stopped Mason Bergh cold to give Miami two points.
The RedHawks outshot the Tigers 36-27 on the night. Neither team converted on the power play with Miami going 0-for-3, but killing off all four Colorado College man advantages. Larkin turned away 26 of 27 shots for Miami while Leclerc made 35 saves in goal at the other end.
These teams finish their weekend series on Saturday night, with the opening faceoff at 7:05 p.m.
