OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University women's basketball team dropped a 65-53 decision to IUPUI on Wednesday evening. The defeat drops the Red & White's record to 2-6, while the Jaguars improve to 7-1.
Freshman Lauren Dickerson led the way with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Molly McDonagh and Jazz Smith spearheaded the effort on the glass with eight and seven rebounds, respectively. IUPUI's Danielle Lawrence headed the charge for the opponents, scoring 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
The opening quarter saw some back-and-forth play with both teams trading chances over the first several minutes. Dickerson got things started for Miami as she sunk her first two attempts from the field. She finished the opening frame with six points. Lawrence had the hot hand early for the Jaguars, scoring 11 points, including a 3-for-4 effort from long range. IUPUI held an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
It took two minutes into the second quarter for either team to get a bucket but IUPUI's Holly Hoopingarner finally broke the drought with exactly eight minutes remaining in the half. Miami fired right back with a jumper from McDonagh and, after another make from the Jaguars, a Dickerson jumper and two Megan Galloway free throws brought the IUPUI lead down to five with 5:53 left in the quarter. The Jaguars used the final few minutes to rewiden their lead, eventually getting it to 11 before a McDonagh triple went through with 11 seconds left to give the RedHawks a more manageable deficit of eight heading into the break. Miami entered the locker room down 32-24.
Following an IUPUI layup 15 seconds into the second half, it was all RedHawks over the next several minutes. A three-pointer from McDonagh and layups by Abbey Hoff, Galloway and Dickerson quickly had MU within one. The RedHawks took the lead for the first time since the opening moments of the game with 4:53 left in the third on a Dickerson jump shot, but the Jaguars worked their way back into the lead and entered the fourth and final quarter with a 45-42 edge.
The RedHawks' three-point deficit was as close as the game would get down the stretch as IUPUI gradually rebuilt their lead over the course of the fourth quarter. Miami finished the game shooting 34.4 percent from the field, while the Jaguars hit 44.7 percent of their shots.
The Red & White get back at it on Saturday when they host Northwood at 1 p.m., which will be part of Miami Athletics' `Give Back' tripleheader of women's basketball, men's basketball and hockey.
