COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus natives Kiefer Sherwood and Carson Meyer combined for three goals and an assist in their return to their home towns to help the Miami hockey team post an impressive 6-3 comeback win at No. 9/10 Ohio State.
The RedHawks (5-8-5) scored four times in the third period to post their second-straight comeback victory after falling behind 2-0.
"Games off breaks are usually a little sloppy at the beginning," head coach Enrico Blasi said. "I thought that was the case today. We got better in the second period and the third period was probably our best period of the first half of the season. Great to see our guys executing and playing well."
Miami found itself trailing almost instantaneously as an initially harmless looking dump in by Tommy Parran ended up taking a hop at the last moment and going into the top corner nine seconds in. OSU (9-3-4) would later capitalize on a turnover at MU blue line that sprung Mason Jobst for a breakaway goal to make it 2-0 with just 9:17 gone by.
The Buckeyes enjoyed an 8-3 shot advantage in the middle of the opening stanza, but the RedHawks collected themselves the rest of the frame and took the last four shots on goal. Miami did get the first power play of the afternoon with 2:50 to go until intermission, but did not get anything going. It appeared that MU would have to address a two-goal deficit at the break, but Josh Melnick's point shot had eyes through traffic and picked a corner with 4.5 seconds left to cut the deficit to 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
That improved play by Miami carried over into the second as a number of chances presented themselves early on. After drawing an assist on Melnick's goal late in the first, Meyer was the recipient of a feed at his off wing during a 2-on-1 as Anthony Louis teed up the freshman for a one-timer that evened the score at 2-2 just 1:57 into the middle stanza. Colin Sullivan also drew an assist stepping up and intercepting a pass in the neutral zone for his first point of the season.
Miami continued to pressure the Ohio State net throughout the period and got a couple cracks at the power play, but was unable to capitalize. A late penalty on MU gave OSU an opportunity with the man advantage and it capitalized by blocking a clearing attempt before the puck bounced to David Gust, who scored in the slot with 2:35 left in the frame to but the Buckeyes ahead 3-2 through two periods.
Meyer and Gordie Green both had close range scoring chances in the low slot, but Christian Frey kept both of those shots out as Miami came out aggressively to start the third. Ohio State had one good opportunity early in the frame when Miguel Fidler got fed beneath the left circle up close, but Ryan Larkin held his ground to make the save.
With 9:42 remaining, the Buckeyes were called for a penalty and allowed the RedHawks to go back to work on the power play. Miami held the puck in the zone for large stretches without scoring and it appeared its power play slump would continue until the puck got sent to Justin Greenberg on the right wing with an easy entry to the zone. Greenberg, flung it across to Willie Knierim, who waited for an opening before hitting Green in the middle where he redirected the puck home for his second career goal, tying it up at 3-3 with 7:57 left.
The RedHawks poured it on from there and eventually struck in transition again as Green chipped the puck ahead to Zach LaValle, who played it off the wall to himself and created a 2-on-1 before feeding Sherwood for a one-timer for the left circle and his eighth goal of the season. That tally gave Miami its first lead of the day with 5:16 left. That group continued playing out its shift and Sherwood got the puck in the slot and beat Frey again 53 seconds later to make it a 5-3 game. The Buckeyes attempted to push the envelope by pulling Frey for an extra attacker, but Scott Dornbrock picked off an outlet pass at the red line and fired it into the vacated goal with 3:05 left to seal the victory.
Miami outshot Ohio State 20-7 over the final two periods, including 14-1 in the decisive third period. The Red and White went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Buckeyes went 1-for-2 on the man advantage. Larkin stopped 12 of 15 shots while Frey turned away 23 Miami attempts. Ten different Miami skaters recorded points while Sherwood (2g), Meyer (1g, 1a), Green (1g, 1a) and LaValle (2a) each recorded multi-point performances.
The Red and White resume National Collegiate Hockey Conference play at home on Jan. 6 when they host St. Cloud State at Steve 'Coach' Cady Arena. Opening faceoff is at 7:35 p.m.
